Breast surgery is a form of surgery performed on the breast.

Type

Types include:

  • Breast-shrinking operation
  • Augmentation mammoplasty
  • Mastectomy
  • Lumpectomy
  • Breast surgery, less radical cancer surgery than mastectomy
  • Mastopection, or breast removal surgery
  • Surgery for breast abscess, including incision and drainage and lactiferous duct excision
  • Surgical breast biopsy
  • Microdochectomy (removal of the lactiferous ducts)

Complications

After surgical intervention to the breast, complications may arise associated with wound healing. As in other types of surgery, hematoma (postoperative bleeding), seroma (fluid accumulation), or site-incision damage (wound infection) may occur.

The breast hematoma due to surgery will usually complete with time but should be followed up with a more detailed evaluation if not. Breast abscess may occur as a post-surgical complication, for example after cancer treatment or mamaplasty reduction. In addition, if the breast has undergone radiation (as in radiation therapy to treat breast cancer), there is an increased risk of complications (eg, reactive inflammation, chronic draining wounds, etc.) for breast biopsy or other interventions into the breasts, often considered a "minor" operation. The combined effects of radiation and breast cancer surgery can in particular lead to complications such as breast fibrosis, secondary lymphedema (which can occur in the arm, breast or chest, especially after axillary lymph node dissection), breast asymmetry, and chronic. Recurrent breast cellulite, each of which has long-term effects.

Ultrasound can be used to distinguish between seroma, hematoma, and edema in the breast. Further possible complications are fat necrosis (early cell fat cell loss) and scar retraction (shrinkage of the area around the surgical scar). In rare cases after reconstruction or breast augmentation, slow seroma may occur, defined as sera that occurs more than 12 months postoperatively.

There is preliminary evidence suggesting that negative pressure wound therapy may be useful in the healing of complicated breast lesions resulting from surgery.

Regional anesthesia is superior to general anesthesia for the prevention of persistent postoperative pain three to 12 months after breast cancer surgery.

In post-operative medical imaging, many findings can be easily misinterpreted as cancer. In MRI, the scars that had occurred years earlier were usually "silent".
