California Redemption Value ( CRV ), also known as California Refund Value , is the regulatory fee paid on recyclable beverage containers in California. This fee is set by the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act of 1986 (AB 2020, Margolin), and since 2010 the program is managed by Cal/EPA California Recycling and Recovery Resources Department (formerly managed by the California Conservation Department, Recycling Division).

Bandages pay CRV for beverages with aluminum, plastic, glass, and bimetall containers and anyone can receive the same amount instead of a container by bringing it to a recycling center. The symbol on the beverage that is eligible for replacement is "CA CRV". Currently, CRV is 5 cents for containers less than 24 ounces and 10 cents for 24 ounces or larger containers. The state also allows recyclers to pay by weight, where the state also sets a separate minimum price per pound. When redeeming in amounts of up to 50 containers, the consumer has the right to be paid on a count on the request. In larger quantities, recyclers have more flexibility. Recyclers have the right to refuse or offer rebates for contaminated materials.

The cost for California Redemption Value is similar to a bottle charge deposit used in another state, but it is technically charged to the distributor of the drink. Such costs tend to be passed on to retailers and to consumers through normal market forces. Distributors and retailers typically issue CRVs as a different part of the purchase price in advertisements and on receipts (eg the cost for 50 cents of soda bottles may appear on receipts as "45 cents plus 5 cents CRV").

One way the difference between a CRV and a system in which a consumer pays a deposit or tax appears is that the sales tax is valid for the amount of CRV, if the item is subject to sales tax. If it is not part of the base price of the product, the sales tax will not apply to it. Thus, when the State of California raise the CRV from $ 0.04 on the 2 liter/$ 0.02 bottle to $ 0.08 and $ 0.04, respectively, then again to $ 0.10 and $ 0.05 , respectively, it also increases California's sales tax revenue derived from the fees charged.

Other states have similar bottle/bottling laws, including Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, New York, Oregon and Vermont.
