A container of foam food is a disposable container for a variety of foods and beverages, such as instant noodles processed, raw meat from supermarkets, ice cream from ice cream shops, cooked food from food stalls or food stalls, or beverages like "coffee to go". They are also commonly used to serve takeout food from the restaurant, and are also available with requests for visitors wishing to bring home their leftovers. Foam is a good thermal insulator, making containers easy to carry as well as keeping food at an existing temperature when stuffed into a container, whether hot or cold.

Construction and composition

The foam container is brought out made of EPS foam, or other polystyrene foam type, and is produced by injecting the foam into the mold. They are usually white, although they may be printed or impressed with the company logo or other messages.

Incorrectly referred to as Styrofoam, which is a trademark of The Dow Chemical Company for the currently closed cell extruded polystyrene foam made for thermal insulation and crafting applications. This term is often incorrectly used as a general term for expanded (not extruded) polystyrene foams, such as disposable coffee cups, coolers, or packing pads, which are usually white and made of expanded polystyrene beads.

This is a different material from extruded polystyrene used for Styrofoam house insulation. Polystyrene foam is used for craft applications, which can be identified by its roughness and by the fact that crunches are cut, soluble in many organic solvents, cyanoacrylate, and propellant and spray solvent, and not specifically identified as expanded or extruded. Another trade name for the expanded polystyrene is thermacol, which is derived from BASF.

Variety

Different types of foam containers may include:

  • A rectangular clamshell-style container with attached cover, which comes in various sizes. The larger ones usually have several compartments, allowing different foods to remain separated from each other. This variety usually has several small projections on the lid of the container, which match the slot at the bottom to "lock" it, thus keeping the cover closed. This container is leak-proof only when stored upright, and often has a square divider area for labeling.
  • A cylinder-style container with a separate, transparent or opaque plastic cover that can close tightly to withstand leaks. The container may or may not be tapered downwards. Both the overall size and the ratio of height to diameter can vary greatly. Such containers usually contain soup and stews; however, smaller varieties are often used to store sauces and seasonings.

Chinese Cuisine

Foam containers are the most common appetizer boxes used for Chinese cuisine in East and Southeast Asia. It's standard for Cantonese cuisine in Hong Kong and many parts of China and sometimes used abroad in various restaurants, especially in the United States and Canada.

Environmental issues

Foam exhaust containers made entirely of polystyrene foam affect the environment because it is not easy to decompose. However, the degradation of styrene microbes through methanogens has been investigated and confirmed, intermediate products into various organic substances and carbon dioxide. Pseudomonas putida can also convert styrene oil into various biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates. Some cities forbid the use of foam containers, especially San Francisco, Seattle and Portland, Oregon. In 2013, the mayor of New York City proposed banning food containers from foam for health and environmental reasons. Implementation of this plan began in early 2015, but the court ruling in September 2015 has since withstood the ban.

Health issues

It is debatable whether styrene can migrate to food stored in frothy food containers even for a short time. Some researchers argue that polystyrene containers pose a health risk, while industry advocates argue that small amounts of styrene are present naturally in food. Styrene foam containers can melt if food or liquid has a high enough temperature. Some containers have been tested and labeled for safe use in microwave ovens, although no such label does not mean the containers are unsafe for this use; care must be taken.

Styrene is considered by EPA and IARC as a possible carcinogen. This poses a health risk to workers engaged in the production of styrene and polystyrene goods, and the industry has a compliance program to handle obligations. Prolonged exposure to styrene in large numbers can affect the central nervous system, causing diseases such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
