Origins

The proposal for a city-based one-passenger car electric car racing championship was conceived by Jean Todt, president of world motorsport, FÃÆ'  © dà © Ã… © ration Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), to politicians Alejandro Agag and Antonio Tajani at dinner at a small Italian restaurant in the French capital of Paris on March 3, 2011. Tajani concentrates on electrifying the car industry, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and introducing hybrid and electric systems. Agag endorsed Todt's proposal after the latter discussed the FIA opening a tender to organize the series. Agag told Todt that he would take the task because of his previous experience in negotiating contracts with television stations, sponsors and marketing.

Overview

The Formula E championship is currently contested by ten teams with two riders each. The race takes place on the downtown temporary circuit which is 1.9 to 3.4 km (1.2 to 2.1 m).

Race day format

All events start with two practice sessions in the morning, 45 minute opening session followed by a further 30 minutes session. Each driver has two cars available with 200 kW available throughout.

The qualifying session took place earlier in the day and lasted about an hour. The racers are divided into four groups of five, with each group having six minutes to set their best lap. Full power of 200 kW is available in all drivers with only one car. Since the second season, the five fastest racers then came out again, one-by-one, in a Super Pole shoot to determine the top five grid positions.

The race itself lasts for about 50 minutes with the driver making a mandatory pit stop to replace the car with two pit crews helping the driver change the seatbelts, and for safety reasons, there is a minimum time required for the pit stop (which differs from path to path). Tire changes, unless caused by puncture or damage, are not allowed during this pit stop. In race mode, maximum power is limited to 180 kW. Points are awarded using a standard FIA system.

Fanboost

For every race, fans can choose their favorite drivers through various social media channels to give them an extra boost of power. Voting started six days before the event and closed after the opening six minutes of the race. The three winning Fanboost drivers each receive an additional 100 kJ of energy to be used in a power window between 180 kW and 200 kW.

Score point

Points are awarded to the top ten drivers using a standard FIA system. Three points are also awarded to the driver who secures the leading position, while the driver who arranges the fastest lap receives additional points (two points during the first two seasons). The championship consists of championships of drivers and teams. The final pair of drivers season is the best result for the driver. Total teams made by calculating the score of both drivers throughout the season.

Car

For the first season, all teams provided electric racing cars built by Spark Racing Technology, called Spark-Renault SRT 01E. The chassis was designed by Dallara, with an electric motor developed by McLaren (same as used on the P1 supercar), a battery system made by Williams Advanced Engineering and a five-speed Hewland gearbox. Michelin is the official tire supplier. For the first season, 42 electric cars were ordered by the series, with four cars available for each of the ten teams and two cars saved for testing purposes.

The average Formula E car has a power of at least 250 horsepower (190 kW). This car can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3 seconds, with a maximum speed of 225 km/h (140 mph). Generators used to recharge batteries supported by glycerine, a by-product of bio-diesel production.

Since the second season rule allows new powertrain manufacturers, manufacturers are able to build electric motors, inverters, gearboxes and cooling systems. Chassis and batteries remain the same. There are nine manufacturers that created powertrains for the 2016-17 season: ABT Schaeffler, Andretti Technologies, DS-Virgin, Jaguar, Mahindra, NextEV TCR, Penske, Renault, and Venturi.
