Vegas Vacation is a 1997 American comedy film directed by Stephen Kessler. This is the fourth installment in the movie series National Lampoon Vacation, and was written by Elisa Bell, based on stories by Bell and Bob Ducsay. Movie stars Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo and Randy Quaid, with Ethan Embry and Marisol Nichols as children Griswold, Rusty and Audrey. The film opens at # 4 at the box office and earns more than $ 36.4 million domestically. Vegas Vacation became the first theatrical movie Vacation that did not carry a National Lampoon label or scriptwriting credit from John Hughes.

Plot
At work, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) has created a longevity food preservative, earning him a huge bonus check. Clark announces to his family that he's taking them on vacation. Part of the reason for the trip was for Clark and Ellen to renew their wedding vows. However, the excitement diminished when Clark said they were heading to Las Vegas, Nevada. His wife, Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) and teenage daughter, Audrey (Marisol Nichols) have their doubts, because Las Vegas is not known for its family-friendly atmosphere, while Rusty's (Ethan Embry) teenager seems more enthusiastic. That night they attended Siegfried & amp; Roy's show.
After traveling to Vegas, they met the "woman in Ferrari" (Christie Brinkley) who appeared in the first film. Clark is the only one who saw him, but then realizes that he now has a child.
Upon arriving in Vegas, the family started a series of misadventures. The Griswolds visits Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid), the husband of Ellen Catherine's cousin (Miriam Flynn). Eddie and his family now live in the desert north of Las Vegas, where the place used to test hydrogen bombs. While on a tour of the Hoover Dam group led by Arty guide John P. Finnegan, Clark left the group after accidentally creating a leak on the sidewalk inside the dam, and was forced to climb the scaffold to the top of the dam to get out, because of his cry for help can not be heard above the roaring water of the overflow channel. The next night, they were surprised to find a ticket to Wayne Newton's concert and a dress for Ellen had been sent to their hotel room. They went to the concert, only to realize that Newton had sent the dress. While singing, she brings Ellen up onto the stage to sing with her, and visits at their desks.
The next day, the family agreed to "day alone" and handed over to their own devices. Clark goes to the casino and becomes addicted to gambling, usually losing to a real blackjack dealer (Wallace Shawn) who enjoys Clark's humiliation. Rusty gets a fake ID from a Frank Sinatra-like (Toby Huss) and becomes a winning high roller, taking the pseudonym 'Nick Pappagiorgio'. Audrey starts hanging out with the exuberant and beautiful Eddie exotic dancer princess Vicki (Shae D'Lyn) and her friends. And Ellen starts spending time with Wayne Newton, who has feelings for her.
Finally, Clark staked a $ 22,600 family bank account, leading Ellen furiously and both children leaving him. Rusty went gambling for the car, and won four, while Audrey went to the strip club with Vicki and got a job as a go-go dancer. Eddie - who has money buried in his front yard - is trying to come to save Clark in return for everything Griswolds has done for him and his family for years. Clark and Eddie go to a local casino to get their money back, but eventually Clark also gambles Eddie's money, causing him to reevaluate his behavior. Clark then realizes that he no longer cares to get his money back, but he needs to get his family back.
Clark then gathers his family from all over Vegas and they are risking their last two dollars on the Keno game. They sat next to the old man (Sid Caesar) who praised Clark in his family, and hinted that he had been lonely all his life. Out of sympathy, Clark tells the man to consider himself part of the Griswold family for the night. The man gladly accepted Clark's offer, and both sides started the game. At first, Griswolds was optimistic, but because they realized they had lost the game, they sat together in silence. Suddenly, the man next to them happily declares that he has won the game. In an explosion of excitement, he suddenly starts to come in and out of consciousness while Ellen sends Rusty for help. He awakens for the last time and whispers a message to Clark, before dropping his victory ticket and down for the last time.
Clark, confused, tells Ellen that the man said, "get the tickets." When casino and paramedical security guards arrived, they declared that the man was officially dead. They told Griswolds that his name was Mr. Ellis, and commented about how sadly his loneliness was for them. When Mr. Ellis was taken away, the janitor approached with a carpet cleaner, headed straight for the winning ticket on the floor. Although it seems Clark will let him disappear, at the last second, he shifts the ticket out of the carpet cleaning lane. With their new victory, Clark and Ellen renew their wedding vows. After that, Clark gives Eddie $ 5,000 to repay his kindness. They all went home in four cars Rusty won on slot machines: the Dodge Viper red, the Ford Mustang maron, the black Hummer H1, and the white Ford Aspire.

Production
Vegas Vacation was filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the busy tourist season, from mid-June to late September 1996. Extensive footage was taken at The Mirage Resort, and included resort diving dolphins and Siegfried & Roy's show. Other shooting locations include Casa de Shenandoah, home of the entertainer Wayne Newton, who also appeared in the film. The scene was also filmed at the Klondike Hotel and Casino, and at the soundstage at the Las Vegas Film Production Film Production Center.
Nichols and Embry became different fourth actors to portray Griswold, Audrey and Rusty's children. This fact was referenced at the beginning of the film when Clark Griswold commented that he no longer recognized his children.
The role played by Toby Huss is similar to a number of MTV commercials from the early 1990s that featured Huss as a singer in Las Vegas.
The death scene of Caesar Sid reminds of the death scene of Jimmy Durante in This is Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World where Caesar also starred. His character is one of the witnesses of Durante's death.
Release and acceptance
Vegas Vacation was released to theaters in the United States on February 14, 1997. To date, this is the only movie Vacation to receive PG rating, as all other ratings are rated R ( original movies and 2015 Holidays ) and PG-13 ( European Holidays and Christmas Holidays ). The film was later released on home video and onto television.
Critical response
The film received negative reviews. It has collected a rating of only 13% in Rotten Tomatoes based on 30 reviews. The consensus criticism states, "The Vacation franchise reached the lowest point in this disgusting and warm journey to a city that is free of laughter."
Sequel
The film is followed by another movie sequel, titled Vacation , which serves as a continuation and modernized reboot of this series. Unlike Vegas Vacation and the previous sequel ( Christmas ) largely for family audiences, the 2015 movie has a much more explicit tone and is the first since the original entry to receive R- rating. It was released on July 29, 2015.
