A Woman's Face is a 1941 American noir film directed by George Cukor, starring Joan Crawford, Melvyn Douglas and Conrad Veidt. It tells the story of Anna Holm, a visibly flawed exploiter who, because of her appearance, hates everyone she meets. When a plastic surgeon corrects this destruction, Anna becomes torn between the hope of starting a new life and returning to her dark past. Most of the films were told in flashbacks when witnesses in the courtroom gave their testimony. This scenario was written by Donald Ogden Stewart, based on the drama Il Etait Une Fois by Francis de Croisset. Another version of the Swedish production, story, was filmed in 1938 as En Kvinnas Ansikte , starring Ingrid Bergman.

Plot

Stipulated in Sweden, the film is featured in a flashback on a trial trip in which a half-hidden young woman, Anna Holm, is accused of murder. The events, as described by witnesses, began the previous years when the nobility of Torsten Barring held a party at a tavern. Guests included Vera, the unbelieving wife of the renowned plastic surgeon, Gustaf Segert. When the store refused to extend his credit, Torsten met the owner of Anna's house - whose face was badly hurt by a fire 22 years ago caused by his father. Torsten treats Anna as if she is beautiful and charming than fear and unpleasant. Anna is suspicious, and Torsten implies that she may need her help in the future.

Anna is the leader of a gang of gangsters. He got a letter proving Vera cheating and demanding money. Gustaf suddenly comes home and, thinking Anna is a thief, wants to call the police, but Vera convinces him to let her go. Gustaf became interested in Anna's scar and offered to do plastic surgery on her. Anna had twelve operations. In two years, she turns into a beautiful woman who is no longer derided by a stranger. After leaving Gustav's clinic, he returned to Torsten, who was amazed by his new physical beauty. He assures her that he has not joined the angel's side yet.

Torsten lightly told him that his uncle, Consul Magnus Barring, who was very old and very rich, left everything behind his four-year-old grandson. But, if something happens to the grandchildren, Torsten will inherit instead. Anna was horrified by what he drove, but was encouraged through love for Torsten to agree. Using the name "Ingrid Paulson", Anna was hired as a nanny on the recommendation of Torsten and went to live in the castle Barring. He became fond of the friendly Consul and his lovely granddaughter, Lars-Erik. Torsten soon joined them, but the party guests included Gustaf, who admitted "Ingrid" as Anna. Thinking that he has softened and changed his name to start a new life, Gustaf did not reveal his true identity.

The next day, Anna accidentally left Lars-Erik for too long in the sun. The original trouble made Torsten suspicious of his determination to kill the boy. He gave him an ultimatum that Lars-Erik had to die before the next night and he reluctantly agreed. The incident, however, caused Gustaf to become suspicious, especially after seeing Anna with Torsten at a nearby waterfall. Anna took Lars-Erik to ride an open-air cable car across the waterfall. Halfway through, he loosened the bolt and the boy almost fell to his death. Anna pulled her back to safety and hugged her, overcome with regret. Seeing this, Gustaf decided that he had changed for the better.

On the consul's birthday, Anna gave her a miniature chess set. A double sled in the snow is arranged. Anna suddenly saw Lars-Erik in the same sleigh with Torsten. Frantic for the boy's safety, he told Gustaf to chase after them, to acknowledge the whole plan and how he now hated Torsten. When they reached the sled, Torsten would not stop so Anna pulled out a gun and shot him. They saved the boy and Torsten's body went into the waterfall. Anna is on trial for Torsten's murder, in which the whole story is published.

Gustaf testified under oath that he fell in love with her. But the court was not entirely satisfied that he killed to save the boy's life. Anna reveals that she placed a suicide note confessing to the scheme inside the chess set she gave to the Consul. The housekeeper, Emma Kristiansdotter, who hates the new nanny, steals the note without reading it - she thinks of it as a love letter and part of the scheme by Anna to seduce and marry the Consul for her money. While the judges delayed to consider their verdict, Vera sought to make peace with her husband, but she had noticed much of her affair. She persuades Anna to confess her love and she proposes marriage, after which the judge says that the judges are ready to give their decisions, suggesting that Gustaf might want to come too.

Box Office

According to MGM records, the film earned $ 1,077,000 in the US and Canada and $ 830,000 elsewhere.

Critical response

Magazine Crawford observed, "Miss Crawford took a radical step as a glamorous screen girl to allow the makeup needed for face defects in the first half... [Crawford] has a very dramatic and sympathetic role... which he handles it in a top-notch style. "

Recently, film critic Dennis Schwartz discussed the importance of the role for Joan Crawford, "Joan Crawford jumped at the chance to star in this juicy role despite having to play a woman whose face was deformed (at least for half the film), which she suggested by even Louis B. Mayer (head of MGM) that it can be expensive for the glamorous actress in the future.Instead it turns out to be one of the more recognized roles and does nothing but promote her further career as a serious dramatic actress (she won an Oscar for Mildred Pierce in 1945, which he claims the film has a cumulative effect in helping him win the award.â € Make up Crawford's scar is credited to Jack Dawn, who creates makeup for films such as The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941).
