Histori

The race is held in January of each year, first run on January 14, 2000. In April 2007, it was announced that the 2008 race would be the world's richest running event in history, with a million dollars offered for the world record and $ 250,000 for first place for men and women.

The 2008 race was won by Haile Gebrselassie in 2:04:53, making it the second fastest marathon of all time, but not fast enough to claim world records and million-dollar prizes.

The 2012 edition proved to be one of the fastest finishing areas of the day: a record of four athletes running under two hours and five minutes. Ayele Abshero won 2: 4:23 hours of course time, which was the fourth fastest on the all time list and fastest time ever run by an athlete on their marathon debut. Other podium winners also go into the top ten all the time: runner-up Dino Sefir becomes the eighth fastest man by 2:04:50, while Markos Geneti becomes the ninth with 2:04:54. Behind them, Jonathan Kiplimo Maiyo became the 13th fastest man by 2:04:56 and Tadese Tola became the 16th fastest by 2:05:10.

The women side is also fast: Aselefech Mergia ran the course and time record of Ethiopia 2:19:31 hours to win, becoming the seventh fastest woman ever. For the first time in history, the top three runners of the race all finished under two hours and twenty minutes: debutant and runner-up Lucy Wangui Kabuu became the eighth fastest woman with a time of 2:19:34 hours and Mare Dibaba became the fastest woman to- 15 within 2:19:52 hours. Behind him, Ethiopian fellow Bezunesh Bekele and Aberu Kebede climbed to the 16th and 17th fastest places of all time.

The 2013 edition, running under a thick fog, is also very fast. Ethiopian winner Lelisa Desisa, winning in the final 200m sprint with 2:04:45 time, and leading 4 other runners for sub-2: 05 runs. On the women's side, Ethiopia's Tirfi Tsegaye won within 2:23:23, 16 seconds ahead of compatriot Ehitu Kiros. The top 4 were on the side of the men and the big 6 on the women's side were all Ethiopians.

In the 2015 edition, Shure Demise set a junior world record in the marathon where he completed the whole as a whole.
