Plot

Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny realized that, apart from them, everyone at school had bought the latest fashions, the High School Musical series. The four boys repeatedly watched the rest of the South Park Elementary collectively break the song, in the spirit of musical films. Do not know what it is High School Musical, boys watch one of the movies, but do not like it, and swear it will never be part of this mode. Cartman decided to commit suicide by triggering carbon monoxide poisoning while sleeping under his mother's car (with the engine turned on) but failed because the hybrid car did not "do any tricks anymore".

Stan is afraid that Wendy becomes close to a popular third-grade student named Bridon Gueermo (voiced by Parker), as they tend to share a major role in musical routines. Stan's talk to Bridon in the hope of driving him away from Wendy, and finds Bridon prefers to play basketball rather than sing. This suggests that the reason that Bridon made the trend because his metrosexual father who was crazy and impressed theater (also voiced by Parker) forced him to do so. Stan forced him to try with the basketball team. Although Mr. Gueermo proved to be violent of his family (though only able to do a light and ruthless slap), Bridon finally stood up for himself (punching his father in the face), and joined the team.

In the meantime, not happy to be an outcast at Stanford, Stan decided to join the trend and study the High School Musical series intensively, despite swearing against it. He assures Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny that the world has changed, and they can not go against the stream anymore. The next day at school, the four boys performed a song along with an equally complex dance routine about the importance of following one's dream. However, after learning that Bridon had joined the basketball team, everyone was not interested and went during a boy show to watch Bridon play basketball instead. The four children learned that the rest of the school just loved Bridon because of his looks and charisma and not his own fame.

Production

"Elementary School Musical" was one of dozens of episodes of South Park that was developed on Thursday before being broadcast during the author's meeting. High School Musical 3: Senior Year had opened in theaters a few weeks earlier and became a hot topic nationally; the team had previously mentioned the series as a target for satire. The initial idea of this episode was based on that everyone in South Park was singing High School Musical -style number, except for four main boys. Co-creator Trey Parker series joked during the meeting that his goal for next week is to write music as a whole. The authors returned to the idea not long after, and the episode was put into production.

Parker and Stone watched the High School Musical during the development of the show. The previous episode of the series, "About Last Night...", has required the duo to see the Oceans Eleven series in preparation, which they then say is an easier and more fun task. Upon realizing that songs in the High School Musical series appeared to be disconnected from the plot, Parker found it easier to write fodder songs in a week. Stone commented that the episode's story structure is unique in the character set for making decisions, but the audience does not see the decisions made, and the story is somewhat truncated after the decision. This is especially evident in the last moments of the episode, where the audience never saw the children prepare their music numbers, but in the end were surprised by it. Parker and Stone noted that this structure was explored further in the episode of the following season, The Ungroundable.

Stone notes that the children depicted in South Park are fourth graders, the target audience for Disney movies. She speaks in DVD commentary episodes about how children of that age tend to watch television where characters are older and often teenagers. Parker and Stone both admit their favorite part of the episode is the scene where Briddon Gueeder's father leads, when they find his character, with his slapping harassment, very funny.

Cultural reference

This episode is the satire of the High School Musical series; when children watch movies in an attempt to understand the phenomenon, a song from the original movie "Stick to the Status Quo," sounds. When asked where the boys had been unaware of the High School Musical craze, Craig replied "Peru"; this is a reference to episodes from the beginning of the season, "Pandemic" and "Pandemic 2: The Startling," where boys travel to Peru.

During Bridget's basketball game, his father was swayed by the music of "jam jock" played through a loudspeaker, which included Queen's music and Gary Glitter. When Stan is pressed to sing a song in the episode, he moves on to the only song he knows: the standard "Someone in the Kitchen with Dinah" and "Happy Birthday".
