A flip-top , swing-top , or Quillfeldt stopper (after inventor, Charles de Quillfeldt) is a type of closure that is often used for bottles containing carbonated beverages, such as beer or mineral water. The mouth of the bottle is sealed by a plug, usually made of porcelain or plastic, fitted with a rubber gasket and held by a set of wires. The bottle can be opened and sealed repeatedly and without the use of a bottle opener, with the cable working in the same way as the latch clamp. Flip-tops are the dominant method of sealing beer and mineral water bottles prior to the invention of crown corks.

This is sometimes called a guarantee closing.

Histori

Before making flip-top bottles, bottles are often made from glass that is blown and sealed with cork, which is difficult to open by hand and often unreliable, especially for carbonated beverages such as mineral water or beer.

As a precursor of the flip-top, the closure of "guarantees" or "Kilner" was discovered in 1859, where the lid with a gasket is held by a harness wire and sealed by a separate set of wires.

The first flip-top closure was made by Charles de Quillfeldt in the United States, who filed a patent on November 30, 1874, receiving the patent number 158406. The right was purchased by Henry W. Putnam who adjusted the design for use on fruit jars.. He received a patent April 25, 1882, called "Trademark Lightning" and the urn became known as a lightning jar. Several other varieties have been developed.
