Julie Suzanne Chen (born January 6, 1970) is an American television personality, newsreader, and producer for CBS. He has been the host of CBS reality television program, Big Brother since his debut in July 2000 and is the longest host of any country version. He is also a co-host and moderator of CBS's daytime event The Talk . Previously, he was one of the CBS's The Early Show hosts.

Daughter of Chinese immigrants, Julie Chen was born in Queens, New York City. His grandfather, Lou Gaw Tong, grew into a "poor man" in Penglai village village in Fujian province in China but became rich through a grocery store chain and eventually became a polygamy with nine wives and 11 children. Julie has two older sisters, Gladys and Victoria.

Careers

One of his previous jobs came in June 1990, an internship at CBS Morning News with Andy Cohen - a series he would anchor a decade later - where he answers the phone and copies faxes for distribution. The following year, while still at school, he worked for ABC NewsOne for a season as a desk assistant. He was then promoted to work as a producer for the next three years. The following year, he traveled to Dayton, Ohio, to work as a newsreader for WDTN-TV, from 1995 to 1997. During his stay in Dayton, Chen underwent blepharoplasty, a plastic surgical procedure whose goal was to make his eyes look bigger.

From 1999 to 2002, Chen was a newscaster of CBS Morning News and CBS This Morning and then The Early Show, along with Bryant Gumbel, Jane Clayson, Hannah Storm, Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez, Erica Hill, and Rene Syler. From 2002 to 2010, he was the co-host of The Early Show on CBS, before leaving the daily position but remaining anchor of the program's specific contribution until its cancellation. Prior to CBS News, he was a reporter and weekend newsreader at WCBS-TV in New York City.

Since 2000, he has also hosted an American version of Big Brother. During the first season (2000), Chen was widely criticized in the media for sending his highly screened manuscripts in interaction with studio audiences and in interviews with live programs, earning him the nickname "Chenbot." He has indicated in two separate interviews that he did not commit a personal offense against the term, adding that it may have come from an "appropriate on-air style" derived from "the desire to be objective." He again confessed a nickname while discussing a cup made in his likeness when he proudly declared, "I am Chenbot!" in the segment at The Early Show .

Chen is the moderator of the daytime CBS talk show The Talk , which aired on October 18, 2010. The show is similar to The View although it is not politicized. The show features Chen, Eve, Sharon Osbourne, the creator of Sara Gilbert's show, and Sheryl Underwood as co-host. Former fellow hosts include Marissa Jaret Winokur, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, and Aisha Tyler.

In January 2015, Chen became a guest on the episode of "NCIS: Los Angeles" In The Line of Duty who plays the US Ambassador.

Personal life

After graduating from USC as a major in English and broadcasting, he became a news assistant for ABC News in Los Angeles, California, in September 1991. There, he met his future lover, television news editor Gary Donahue. Leslie Moonves, president and chief executive officer of CBS Television, began dating Big Brother's host during her marriage to Nancy Wiesenfeld Moonves. On April 22, 2003, a week after Les Moonves signed a five-million-dollar contract with Viacom, his wife filed for divorce at High Court L.A., citing irreconcilable differences, according to his lawyer Dennis Wasser. The divorce process has been delayed for almost two years due to disagreement over financial settlement. On December 10, 2004, Moonves got a court to divorce early, leaving husband-wife support and child support to be determined later on.

On December 23, 2004, Chen and Moonves were married in a private ceremony attended by friends and family in a private home in Acapulco, Mexico. On September 24th, 2009, Chen gave birth to her son, Charlie Moonves.

On September 11, 2013, during the first week of Season 4 of The Talk , Chen revealed that he had undergone blepharoplasty early in his career after being pressured by the previous news director and a high profile agent. Chen said that his decision was to "share" his family, but he said he had to "live with every decision I made and it keeps me where we are today and I will not look back."

Chen speaks Mandarin but is not completely fluent. Regarding his inheritance, he stated: "[W] hen my son was born, it was like my resurrection trying to get back in touch with my Chinese roots.It is important for me to have it back in my life so I can into my child's life." He is also a filial yogini.
