Katara ( ??? , K? T? l? ) is a fictional character in the animated television series Nickelodeon Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra . The characters, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, are voiced by Mae Whitman in the original series and Eva Marie Saint in the sequel series. In addition to this, he was played by Nicola Peltz in the 2010 direct action movie The Last Airbender.

Katara is a fourteen-year-old waterbender (ie, she has the ability to telekinetically control water and ice); at the beginning of the story he is the only waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe, one of two known communities (along with the Northern Water Tribe at the opposite pole) where waterbending is practiced. He and his older brother, Sokka, find an Airbender named Aang, a long-lost Avatar, froze on the iceberg, and accompany him in his attempt to defeat the imperialistic Fire Country and bring peace to a war-torn world. He later received a Master Waterbender from Master Pakku from the Northern Water Tribe at the age of fourteen.

Katara has appeared in other media, such as trading cards, T-shirts, video games, and web comics.

Creation and conception

According to a pilot episode that was not broadcast, Katara's first name was 'Kya', which was later used for her dead mother. In "Tales of Ba Sing Se", Katara's name is written as? ? ? K? (?) Means to check, block, or card; T? (?) Means pagoda; and I? (?) It means interesting. Character 'L?' appears at the end of the first season, while the character 'K?' also appears in the name of Sokka.

In comments of unpaired pilot episodes, co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino stated that Katara's "hair circle" was meant to hang down, but was considered too difficult to animate and spin backwards instead.

Personality

Katara is described as "smart, capable, anime hero", and as "good, brave, and passionate." In many situations, Katara appears to be the mother of another protagonist: the role associated with losing his tribe against attacks and the departure of many members to war, which allegedly requires it (as is his sister Sokka) to assume responsibility beyond his age.. Katara tends to be kind and generous, but often stubborn or restricted by morals; be angry when in doubt, humiliated, or betrayed; and bring hatred for years.

Flow summary

Avatar: The Last Airbender

When Katara was 8 years old, her mother, Kya, sacrificed her life during the Fire State attack to protect Katara; when her daughter takes adult role later on. Despite his growing interest in developing his Waterbending skills, he resigned for cooking and cleaning up while his sister, Sokka, was trained to become a fighter. Later, Katara's father, Hakoda, and other fighters traveled to the Earth's Kingdom to oppose the Fire State; leaving Katara, Sokka, and their grandmother Kanna to take care of the tribe.

The events of Avatar: The Last Airbender began six years later, when Katara and Sokka found Aang in a state of suspended animation and identified herself as Avatar, a messianic figure. Bent on the Waterbending master, Katara joins Aang to reach the North Air Tribe to find the Waterbending master, with Sokka beside them. Upon arrival, Mr. Pakku refused his apprenticeship, for the custom of the North Water Tribe dictated that women could not study Waterbending as a martial art; but after paying attention to the Katara necklace, which he himself gave to Katara's grandmother, he agreed to teach her. Katara has achieved her own skill, Pakku thinks it enough to teach Aang.

Katara then joined Aang to the Earth's Kingdom for her to learn to wrap the earth. In the kingdom of the Earth, General Fong places Katara's life in danger of persuading the State of Aang; but only reached destruction. After Earthbender Toph Bei Fong joined the group to teach Aang, Katara and Toph initially quarrel; but after that it became a friend. In the capital of the Earth Kingdom, Katara met the antagonist Prince Zuko and his sister, Azula; and during the battle, Aang was injured by lightning Azula, where Katara took her to a safe place and eventually cured her.

In a village burdened by Fire Nation pollution, Katara disguises herself as the spirit of the 'Painted Lady' river to help the village. While living with semi-closed Hama, the protagonist learns he is a Waterbender of the Southern Tribe who is imprisoned by the Fire Nation. Later, he offers to teach the Katara a Waterbending technique called "Bloodbending", which allows physical control of animals and humans. When Katara refused to learn this technique, Hama used it on Aang and Sokka, forcing Katara to use the technique itself on Hama. When Prince Zuko joins the protagonist after Invasion fails and gets everyone's trust, he fails to do it with Katara until he helps him find the man responsible for his mother's murder. Despite deciding not to take revenge and not forgiving, he comes to terms with Zuko and accepts her as a friend.

During the end of the four-part series, Katara helps Zuko in preventing Azula into the God of Fire and fights with her; finally defeats him, he heals Zuko. When the war ended, he was seen in Ba Sing Se with other protagonists and he finally shared a passionate kiss with Aang, starting a romantic relationship with him.

Korra Legend

In the sequel series The Legend of Korra, Katara, now eighty-five, is one of the surviving members of the Avatar Team (along with Zuko and Toph). He is a high-level member of the White Lotus and takes it himself to train Korra in waterbending, becoming the latest in the line of masters to serve as a teacher for multiple Avatars. Katara and Aang are also revealed to have three children: Earth without-bender (which later gained the ability to air), Kya waterbender, and tenzin tenants. He played a rather small role in the first season of the series, only giving Korra her blessing to go to the Republic City to train with Tenzin and try not to cure her after she lost her ability to unleash the load, the fire-eaters and the eater for Amon.

In the first episode of the second season of "Rebel Spirit", Katara is seen celebrating with her three children at the Glacier Spirits Festival Southern Water Tribe. While with them, Katara, holding his new grandson Rohan, sees sadly when he sees Kya and Earth joking at Tenzin's cost. At the end of the episode, Katara begs Tenzin to take her brother and sister to the Southern Air Temple, saying that she will enjoy looking back at the time she has to spend with her brothers and it may be best for the third to visit their father's home together. In "Harmonic Convergence," Katara is seen in her healing shack that takes care of the injured Southern Air Tribe soldier, and then uses healing to keep Jinora's grandson's body alive while her soul is trapped in the spirit world. In Light in the Dark , he is seen listening to Avatar Korra talking about an independent South Water Tribe and how he decides to have spirits and humans side by side by leaving open spirit portals.

In the fourth season episode of "Korra Alone", Katara helps Korra in healing her body after being poisoned by Zaheer at the end of the third season, allowing her to walk again after a wheelchair is tied for more than six months.

Ability

Katara's ability developed significantly throughout the series. At first, he had little control over the wetness of his innate water, and often lost control in times of frustration or anger. Thanks to his diligent workouts, instruction scrolls, and guidance under a Master, his skills improved until he was granted the status and title of " Waterbending Yang-style Master ". He was chosen by Korra as his instructor in the Southern Tribe-style martial arts, the art of bending and the art of healing.

Waterbending

Katara is highly skilled at Waterbending who uses Chinese "martial arts" T'ai chi ch'uan and Jeet Kune Do; Katara is the only Master of "Southern Tribe Yang-style" still alive after the 100-year genocide. Waterbending represents an element of change - a form of shapeshifter shaping - and categorized as the most adaptive or flexible of the "four bending arts". Waterbending emphasizes "tenderness and breathing" over "hard aggression"; liquid and graceful, acting in conjunction with the environment; creating opportunities where none exist; This "energy flow" allows their defensive maneuvers to be translated into focus on control and counterattack, altering their opponent's momentum against them. Despite these advantages, Waterbending is almost completely dependent on inertia; it is important for practitioners not to be rigid, but to be fluid and able to adapt to any situation.

"Solid, liquid, gas - Water is an element of change, Water is patient and waiting, Wearing a cliff top, a mountain There is nothing softer and weaker than water, but there is nothing better to strike hard and strong objects. "

Katara has proven to be a formidable opponent to his enemies, able to fight on equality with Azula and Long Feng; He eventually defeated the nation's daughter of fire to show his level of expertise. Without full moon help, Katara can use water to cut objects; calling whip and whip waves of various sizes; covering himself with the water shroud; surfing on long ice; running and standing on the surface of the water; melting and controlling the ice; shaping ice into various shapes; freezing water and objects surrounded by water with little effort; making fog and steam walls; turning steam into ice; evaporates large amounts of water; or obtain weapons of all moisture including his own sweat. He can control large amounts of water at one time, forming large waves and bubbles of water. In one instance, Katara knocked down all of Dai Li, Zuko, and Azula while riding the giant waves. As with all Waterbenders, the maximal Katara power under the influence of the full moon.

Katara demonstrated the ability to float and control water-based fluids, as well as pure water, in the episode "The Southern Raiders", where Katara bends the ink onto the map. She also appears to bend the soup (which allows her to cook the food), and bend the perfume while fighting with a monster that depends on the smell. In the episode "The Painted Lady," he uses his bolt to create a thick fog. Katara also showed the ability to bend the sweat and the ability to manipulate the mud with Toph, who manipulates the faeces while Katara controls the water.

Healing ability

Katara was one of the few waterbenders who were born with a sub-healing ability of wounds or wounds, first shown after he was burned by Aang's first attempt at firebending; He strengthened this capability under the guidance of the North Sea Tribe heal yagoda. He uses it to cure illness; overcome brainwashing; and heals wounds that look like burns and bloody wounds. However, he can not cure all diseases, repair brain damage or heal internal wounds and birth defects. Using the special water he obtained from the North Tribal Spirit Shrine which he kept with him constantly, he was able to heal the fatal wounds Azula inflicted on Aang, thus reviving him from death. He speculates that he will be able to use the same water from the Temple of the Spirit to heal the scars on Zuko's face when they are imprisoned underground together in Old Ba Sing Se. However, they are disconnected before he can try it. At The Legend of Korra , Lin Beifong (daughter of the metalbender Toph) claims that he is the strongest healer in the world.

Bloodbending

Katara has another waterbending technique known as "bloodbending". He is able to manipulate the fluid inside the human body (and possibly other living things), leaving the target immobilized or resisting in any way. Once he takes control, he can make it move in any way he wants. He can only do a bloodbend during the full moon, when his waterbending power reaches its peak. Katara was forced to learn blood massage by Hama, an old Water Tribe woman who originally developed the technique and who wanted Katara to learn it to be passed on to others ("The Puppetmaster"). However, Katara hates this technique and only uses it twice in times of heavy stress. In subsequent years, he worked to make the practice as a crime.
