Plot
Jack Moniker is a wounded Chicago firefighter at work. Using his disability, he retired to the small island of Saint Nicholas, the Caribbean, and bought a small property. Anthony Croyden Hayes, who was appointed by the British crown as governor of St. Nicholas, more concerned with holidays than to reign. Miss Phillipa Lloyd, who visited St. Nicholas with some friends, decides to stay permanently and become Jack's girlfriend.
Jack befriends the financially troubled reggae musician Ernest Reed and they set up Club Paradise, which they market as a Club Med-style resort complete with brochures featuring photos of Jack in disguises on every page. It attracts a handful of tourists, including Barry and Barry who are there for marijuana and women. Most of the films involve the misadventure of tourist comics tailored to island life and the low-rent facilities of Club Paradise. Also traveling to the island was a New York Times travel writer Terry Hamlin who ended up spending most of his time at the company of Governor Hayes. Adding pleasure was Linda White's suburban housewife, who was on vacation with her husband, Randy.
Voit Zerbe plays a key role, as developers who want to run Jack and Ernest off their property so that he can build a large high-end casino on the beach as part of an agreement he made with two business partners. To do so, he used the help of local prime minister Solomon Gundy and the prime ministers to cause trouble and make Club Paradise close "legally." Jack and Ernest went so far as to sneak onto a Zerbe yacht to provide "useful intelligence" to Governor Hayes by finding out what would happen to Saint Nicholas's future. They dive into a yacht ship where they are captured by local police and thrown into jail. When the tactics of Prime Minister Gundy's strong hand were not working, he ordered the island's military takeover. Ernest builds the power of resistance, and St. Nicholas was soon threatened with a possible civil war, which was avoided at the last minute with the help of Jack and Governor Hayes. When Gunder's takeover failed, Zerbe and his comrades left Saint Nicholas and headed for the Cayman Islands.

Production
The shooting took place from April to July 1985. The production company Warner Bros. planned to release it in early 1986, but held it until July.
Bill Murray rejected the main role of the film, which was eventually awarded to Robin Williams; his brother, Brian Doyle-Murray, ended up as a player. John Cleese was also scheduled to star in, but soon got out before Peter O'Toole signed to replace him.
"Ed Roboto" was a pseudonym for Harry Shearer, who was asked to rewrite with Tom Leopold. Only two words of what they write end up in the movie (title). Shearer then commented that she was "very surprised by the movie" so she removed her name from the credit.
Adolph Caesar died of a heart attack four months before the release of the film.

The film is mostly given negative reviews from critics with Rotten Tomatoes maintaining Club Paradise with an 11% rating based on 27 reviews. Peter O'Toole's appearance in the film earned him a Razzie Award nomination for the Worst Supporting Actor, but lost to Jerome Benton for Under the Cherry Moon .
