The sixth season of the Game of Thrones fantasy drama series aired on HBO on April 24, 2016, and was concluded on June 26, 2016. It consists of ten episodes, each about 50-60 minutes long, mostly original content not found in the George RR Martin series A Song of Ice and Fire. Some of the elements of the story come from the novel and from Martin's information was revealed to the runners-performances. The series was adapted for television by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. HBO ordered the season on April 8, 2014, along with the fifth season, which began filming in July 2015 mainly in Northern Ireland, Spain, Croatia, Iceland and Canada. Each episode cost more than $ 10 million.
This season follows a continuing struggle between Starks and other Westeros noble families for Iron Throne. The Starks defeat Bolton's forces in battle, and Jon Snow proclaims the King in the North. Tyrion tries to rule Meereen while Daenerys is held captive by the Dothraki tribe. At King's Landing, Tyrell's forces sought to free Margaery and Loras, but Margaery succumbed to High Sparrow, which became stronger by affecting King Tommen. At his trial, Cersei burns the Great Sept, killing his rival, while Tommen kills himself. Cersei was named the Empress of the Seven Kingdoms. Ellaria Sand and three princess Oberyn Martell killed Doran and Trystane Martell and occupied Dorne. In Essos, Daenerys Targaryen was captured by Khal Moro who took him before the kala; he burned them alive and took over Dothraki's command. Olenna and Dornish allies with Daenerys.
The Game of Thrones features large ensemble players, including Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, and Kit Harington. This season introduced new players, including Max von Sydow, Pilou AsbÃÆ'Ã|k and Essie Davis.
Critics praised the value of production, writing, plot development, and cast. Game of Thrones received the most nominations for the 68th Emmy Primetime Prize, with 23 nominations, and won twelve, including for Outstanding Drama Series for the second year in a row. US audiences rose compared to the previous season, and about 13% during the course, from 7.9 million to 8.9 million by the end.

Plot
After they escape from Winterfell, Sansa Stark travels to the Wall, while Theon Greyjoy returns to the Iron Islands. In Winterfell, Ramsay Bolton secured his claim in North Korea by killing Roose and Walda Bolton and his newly born half-sister. On the Wall, Melisandre revives Jon Snow, who is reunited with Sansa; they collect the loyalists and the battle ensues. Aided by Knights of the Vale, Starks defeated Bolton's forces. Sansa feeds Ramsay to his dog and Jon is proclaimed King in the North.
Outside the Wall, Bran Stark trained with the Three-Eyed Raven but warned the Night King, who launched the White Walker attack. Bran and Meera escaped and were rescued by Benjen Stark. Bran then had a vision of the Joy Tower the previous year, revealing that Jon was not a Ned Stark bastard but a son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.
At King's Landing, Jaime Lannister and Tyrell's forces sought to free Margaery and Loras, but Margaery surrendered to High Sparrow and Tommen made an alliance with Faith. During the hearing of Loras and Cersei, Cersei used fire to burn the Great Sept, killing the High Sparrow, Margaery, Loras, Mace, Kevan and Lancel, while Tommen killed himself after witnessing the incident. Unobstructed, Cersei was crowned the Empress of the Seven Kingdoms. Ellaria Sand and three daughters of Oberyn Martell killed Doran and Trystane Martell and occupied Dorne, and Olenna met Ellaria, at a Vary-mediated summit, to discuss an alliance with Targaryen.
In Braavos, Arya continues her training with Faceless Men, and soon regains her vision. When he refused to complete the mission, Waif was ordered to kill Arya, who killed Waif instead. Arya reaffirmed her identity as Stark and returned to Westeros.
At Riverlands, the Hound, was revealed to have survived his injury, chasing the Brotherhood Without Banners to slaughter the people who saved him. He found Lord Beric Dondarrion executing a traitor bannermen, and asked to join the Ikhwan who traveled north. Jaime Lannister surrounds Riverrun and takes the castle, killing the Blackfish after forcing Edmure Tully to order surrender. Walder Frey celebrates victory before being killed by Arya.
Sam Tarly, Gilly and her son are traveling to the Citadel in Oldtown, stopping to visit Sam's family.
In Essos, Daenerys Targaryen was captured by Khal Moro, who took him before the kala; he burned them alive when they refused to serve and take over Dothraki's command. Tyrion Lannister brought a brief peace to Meereen, which was reinforced when Daenerys returned and flew his dragon into battle against the slaves. Yara and Theon arrive and pledge allegiance to Daenerys after Euron Greyjoy kills their father and usurps the leadership of the Iron Islands. Jorah Mormont set out to find a remedy for greyscale and Daario left in Meereen's command, while Daenerys sailed for Westeros.

Author George RR Martin, who has written one episode for each of the first four seasons, did not write episodes for the sixth season, while he was working to finish writing the sixth novel A Song of Ice and Fire < i> The Winds of Winter . The sixth leading staff are Jeremy Podeswa (episodes 1 and 2), Daniel Sackheim (episodes 3 and 4), Jack Bender (episodes 5 and 6), Mark Mylod (episodes 7 and 8), and Miguel Sapochnik (episodes 9 and 10 ). Filming
The filming for season six starts in July 2015, and ends on December 17, 2015. The budget for the sixth season increased compared to the previous season as each episode cost more than $ 10 million per episode, totaling over $ 100 million for the full season and new high settings for this series. The season was filmed in five different countries, Northern Ireland, Spain, Croatia, Iceland and Canada.
As in previous seasons, a large amount of production took place in Northern Ireland, mainly in Belfast and on the Causeway Coast, including film locations in Binevenagh, Magilligan area used for film scenes for Grasslands Dothraki, and Larrybane Quarry and Ballintoy Harbor, both used for scenes in Islands Iron. The small village of Corbet is also used, to besiege Riverrun. As in previous seasons, some of the Black Castle were placed in an abandoned Magheramorne mine.
From 3 September to 23 October 2015, the event was also filmed in Spain, particularly in Girona, Navarre, Peniscola, and Almera. Some of the filming locations in Spain include Castle of Zafra in Guadalajara, Bardenas Reales Natural Park in Navarre, Alcazaba in Almeria, and Santa Florentina Castle in Canet de Mar.
In August 2015, HBO announced that for the first time since season 1, the event would not take any scene shots in Croatia. The Croatian city of Dubrovnik has stood for King's Landing since the start of season 2; nearby cities like Klis, Split and? ibenik has been used to describe various other locations. Contrary to HBO's statement, the show's performer was seen wearing a costume in Dubrovnik in October 2015.
Only a small part of the season was filmed in Canada (north of Calgary, Alberta): a scene featuring the wolf ghost Jon Snow (played by the Quigly animal actor). However, some special effects were created in Montreal's Rodeo FX studio which has won previous Emmy Awards for his work on the series.
Casting
The sixth season saw the return of Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark, Kristian Nairn as Hodor, Ellie Kendrick as Meera Reed, Gemma Whelan as Yara Greyjoy, and Rory McCann as Sandore "The Hound" Clegane, who did not appear in the fifth season. Clive Russell, Tobias Menzies, Patrick Malahide, Richard Dormer and Paul Kaye also returned to performances such as Brynden Tully, Edmure Tully, Greyjoy, Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr after not appearing since the third season. Jonathan Pryce as High Sparrow has been added to the main player series after appearing in recurring roles in previous seasons.
Across the Narrow Sea, Melanie Liburd plays the Red chaplain from Asshai in the R'hllor service. In Reach, House Tarly was introduced, with Freddie Stroma joining the cast as Samwell Tarly's sister Dicky Tarly, a character mentioned in the novel but has yet to appear in it. Another member of House Tarly introduced was Randyll Tarly, played by James Faulkner; Melessa Tarly, played by Samantha Spiro and Talla Tarly, played by Rebecca Benson.
Veteran actor Max von Sydow plays a role in playing the Three-Eyed-Raven, which trains Bran. This character was previously played by Struan Rodger in the fourth season finals of "The Children". David Bradley confirmed in August 2015, that he will return to the show as Walder Frey after last appearing in the third season finale of "Mhysa", but he does not confirm when he will return. After the second official trailer was released, it was certain that Bradley would appear in the sixth season. Danish actor Pilou AsbÃÆ'Ã|k joined the show as Uncle Theon Greyjoy, pirate captain Euron Greyjoy. Icelandic band members Of Monsters and Men made a cameo appearance. Ricky Champ plays the role of Gatins, a criminal who is part of a band that uses religion to justify racketeering rural populations. The young Ned Stark is portrayed by Sebastian Croft in a flashback scene.
The sixth season also included a traveling theaters group located in Braavos that staged a drama titled "The Bloody Hand", about events that have occurred in King's Landing since the start of the series. Essie Davis and Kevin Eldon joined the cast in this theater group, describing the actors who played Cersei Lannister and Ned Stark, respectively, while Richard E. Grant served as the group's manager. Indie band member Iceland Of Monsters and Men performs as a musician from the Braavos theater group.

The soundtrack for this season was released digitally on June 24, 2016, and was released on CD on July 29, 2016. The album reached # 27 on Billboard 200, < abbr title = "Number"> # 1 in the Soundtrack chart, and # 79 on the Canadian Albums chart on its digital release, with tracks from the final season "Light of the Seven "reached # 1 on Billboard ' from the Spotify Viral 50 graph.

Critical response
This season received very positive reviews, with special praise directed at the episodes "The Door", "Battle of the Bastards" and "The Winds of Winter". At Metacritic, the season (based on the first episode) has a score of 73 out of 100 based on 9 reviews, showing "favorable general reviews". On Rotten Tomatoes, the sixth season had a 96 percent approval rating of 29 critics with an average rating of 8.4 out of 10. The season also received an average 95% episode score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ratings
The end of the season had 8.89 million viewers on an initial view on HBO, up ten percent from the end of last season, which was the most watched episode before this episode. The average gross visibility rate per episode for the show, which includes streaming, DVR recording and recurring performances, reached over 25 million this season, and it was described as the last consensus show on television. The figure is up by 25% over the previous year, and sees season event numbers on its on demand service HBO Now and HBO Go up more than 90%, which is a new record for HBO. Nearly 40% of viewers watch this season on the HBO digital platform. The event also broke the record on pay-TV channels in 2016 in the UK with an average of over five million viewers across all platforms, and in Australia with an average cumulative audience of 1.2 million viewers.

Weiss for Exceptional Writing for Drama series for "Battle of the Bastards", and Miguel Sapochnik for Outstanding Directing for Drama Series for "Battle of the Bastards". For the 7th Critics Television Award, this series wins for the Best Drama Series.

On November 23, 2015, a teaser poster featuring Jon Snow was released on the official Twitter account of Game of Thrones. The 41-second teaser footage was released on December 3, featuring Jon Snow of the fifth season episode of "Hardhome", as well as much of the previous season's spotlight, and the voices of Max von Sydow as the Three-Eyed Raven and Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark. The video also contains new footage of White Walker from the sixth season.
