The sixth season of the American drama television series Scandal was ordered on March 3, 2016 by ABC. It began airing on January 26, 2017 in the United States on ABC. This season includes the 100th episode of the series, becoming the tenth episode of the season. The season is produced by ABC Studios, in collaboration with ShondaLand Production Company; the pioneer is Shonda Rhimes.
This season continues the story of crisis management company Olivia Pope, Olivia Pope & amp; Partners, and employees, and staff at the White House in Washington, D.C. Season six has eleven fixed subscriptions, all returning from the previous season, six of which are part of the original eight players from the first season. The season keeps on air at 9am Thursday night, the same as the previous season, but aired on a mid-season schedule due to Kerry Washington pregnancy. The episode sequence was also shortened from 22 to 16 episodes as a result of Washington's pregnancy.

Development
The scandal was updated for the sixth season on March 3, 2016, by ABC. The series continues to air on Thursdays at 9 pm E. like the previous season. Production began in July, confirmed by executive producer Tom Verica. After Kerry Washington announced that she was pregnant again, TVLine reported that ABC was considering moving the premiere to midseason. In addition, the episode sequences for the sixth season were reduced from 22 to 16 episodes. During ABC's preliminary annual presentation in May, it was announced that Scandal will premiere during the midseason, following the fall of the new series Notorious . Production begins on July 13, 2016, with director and executive producer Tom Verica announcing that the crew is looking for a filming location. The reading table for the premiere is on July 26, 2016, with filming starting soon after. The teaser trailer was released on November 1, 2016 on YouTube. An official trailer for the sixth season was released by ABC on November 3, 2016. This season began airing on January 26, 2017. The promotional poster was released by ABC on November 29, 2016. On February 10, 2017, ABC announced that the series had been updated for the seventh season. It was then announced it would be the last season.

Speaking about the story of the presidential campaign on the show, showrunner Shonda Rhimes spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III character who is no longer president. He said, "I can not tell you about it - but there are plans, Tony is not going anywhere, where is he going?!". The other cast members spoke of Grant's next opinion without a presidency. Tony Goldwyn, actor who plays Fitz, commented "He will be much happier as a post president than as president." Jeff Perry, playing Cyrus Beene, said that "I want our show to create a big role for a president after he gets out of the office that will resonate back into the real world." Executive producer Betsy Beers voiced his excitement about a character who did "whatever he wanted". Other cast members compared Fitz's next move with former US presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Rhimes talked about the presidential election and the factor to the sixth season. He said that in two ways, adding that "We will basically start our season on election night, yes it will play in our season, but we will not spend our time playing the election."
Casting
The sixth season had twelve roles that received star billing, with eleven of them back from the previous season, eight of which were part of the original player of the first season. Kerry Washington continues to play her role as the protagonist of the series, Olivia Pope, former Director of Communications of the White House with her own crisis management firm. Darby Stanchfield plays Abby Whelan, White House Press Secretary, Katie Lowes plays Quinn Perkins, and Guillermo Diaz plays Huck, a troubled technician who works for Olivia. Cornelius Smith Jr. continuing his role as activist Marcus Walker. Jeff Perry describes Cyrus Beene, Chief of Staff at the White House who was fired by Fitz but later reinstated. Portia de Rossi plays Elizabeth North, new Chief of Staff at the White House, and then Chief of Staff for Vice President. Joshua Malina plays the role of David Rosen, former US Attorney, then Attorney General. Bellamy Young continues to act as the Melody Senator "Mellie" Grant, who was expelled from the White House by Fitz, and later joined the presidential campaign for the President. Tony Goldwyn continues to portray Fitzgerald President "Fitz" Thomas Grant III. Scott Foley described Jake Ballard as a former B613 agent and then head of the NSA.
TVLine was announced on August 6, 2016, that Glee -alum Jessalyn Gilsig will replace Joelle Carter as Vanessa Moss, Jake Ballard's wife. Entertainment Weekly was announced on December 5, 2016, that Jeff Perry's regular princess series, Zoe Perry has been cast in a recurring role for the sixth season. It was announced on April 20, 2017, that Portia de Rossi will leave the show after his character was killed in the eleventh episode.
Reception
Review review website Rotten Tomatoes reports an 80% approval rating with an average rating of 7.5/10 based on 10 reviews. The website consensus reads, "Surprisingly and thrilling as ever, Scandal went into the sixth season with the same self-confidence as Olivia Pope herself."
