The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car built by Japanese car manufacturer Subaru since 1989. Its flagship automaker, it's unique in its class to offer all wheel drive as a standard feature, and the traditional Subaru boxer. The Legacy bears the name of Liberty in Australia for honoring Legacy Australia, an organization dedicated to caring for the veteran family of military service.
In 1996, a variant of the legacy with a high suspension called Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the growing class of sport-vehicle vehicles and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. Outback line was divided into its own model in 2000, known as Subaru Outback.
In 2008, 3.6 million Legacy has been built since its 1989 introduction.

Legacy was introduced in 1989 to provide Subaru vehicles to compete in a lucrative North American middle market against the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda6, and Nissan Altima. It was an all-new model, and positioned on top of Leone, XT, Justy, and Kei Rex and Sambar cars in the Subaru model range at the time. The Legacy also introduced an entirely new 4-cylinder flat engine, called the EJ engine, which is quieter and more powerful than the previous EA engine.
The Legacy begins with a 5-door wagon or 4-door sedan body style with FWD and an optional full-time AWD package, and is introduced in North America, England, Germany, the Benelux region of Northern Europe, Japan and Australia. Options include a 4-channel ABS, licensed from Bosch and air suspension control altitude, which lowers vehicles at speeds above 50 mph (80.5 km/h), and also allows drivers to improve ground clearance of vehicles for off-road conditions. It was officially released January 23, 1989 in Japan, with the introductory price of Ã, à ¥ 2,550,000 for turbocharged RS (about USD $ 18,800 at yen exchange rate 1989). The first legacy was available at Japanese dealerships on February 1, 1989, with worldwide distribution starting in 1990.
The US specifications include passive restraint (seatbelts) through the 1994 model with the exception of right-hand drive models only available with conventional seatbelts. The driver's side airbags were an option in mid 1992 and became standard in 1993. Passenger airbags were not available until the 2nd generation arrived in 1995.
USA models include Legacy Sport Sedan, from 1991-1994 and Legacy Touring Wagon from 1992-1994. Both are turbocharged with a closed block EJ22T deck machine. Unique to the US market, SOHC, with different pistons, oil squirters, oil coolers in '91 models, and other improvements. Despite having the same displacement as the non-turbo/naturally aspirated (NA) EJ22E engine used in all other Legacy models, it's not just a turbocharged version of the EJ22E. (For additional note, the GT Legacy 1994 trim uses a non-turbo EJ22E.)
This sedan is available with a 4EAT reinforced automatic transmission or a more powerful 5-speed manual transmission. Carts equipped only with 4EAT.
This is the last turbocharged Subaru model sold in the United States until 2002 WRX debuted.

Second-generation sales in Japan began October 7, 1993, and an introductory price of 2,753,000 for the twin turbo GT (about USD $ 25,250 at the 1993 yen exchange rate), with an introduction to the 1995 model in North America with full body and chassis revisions. The exterior was designed by Olivier Boulay, who was hired by Subaru for the short term. The tail light appearance on the sedan and wagon is influenced by the taillights on SVX. In 1996, Subaru decided to make AWD standard equipment in all vehicles manufactured for the North American market, which will be the case until 2012. Subaru still offers a choice between FWD and AWD for domestic vehicle market for this generation. Improved ground clearance Outback was introduced with this generation in 1995 with AWD only internationally, and air suspension with height control is no longer offered.
The GT model with United States specifications, first offered in 1990 as a turbocharged sedan or cart in Japan, and as a trim package for the United States version in 1994, became an upgraded model that was upgraded in 1996, using the new 2.5J DOHC EJ25D naturally aspirated engine. "Limited" edition trim levels are introduced, offering heated leather, or fabrics, chairs and trim and moonroof colored glass. The term "Limited" appeared in the "GT", known as "GT Limited" in 1998. The term "Limited" was used by itself in Outback in 1998. Drivers and front passenger airbags were added to the redesigned interior as standard equipment according to US Federal Government regulations. 1999 marks the 30th anniversary of Subaru in America, and the last of the second generation in North America. There is a special 30th Anniversary Edition offered in the US with upgraded interior and sunroof, spoiler, alloy wheels on trim level "L" cars. The US-spec "Brighton" trim level also comes from the first-generation facelifted version that is priced under the "L" trim option.
In Japan, GT/B-Spec was introduced in 1994 with lower suspension and rigid and higher performance rear differentials. The next generation of GT-B was introduced in June 1996, with the front and back struts supplied by Bilstein, with upgrades also available in the RS. The designation of "B" means Bilstein. Turbocharged versions continue to be available in markets that use right-hand-drive configurations. Special versions for touring and racing are available in Japan, as well as DOHC 2-liter twin sequential turbocharged EJ20H versions on both legacy GT sedans and wagons with automatic transmissions and RS and GT-B sedans with EJ20R and manual transmission and slightly higher horsepower ratings, both identified as "Box 2-stage Twin Turbo" on the engine shroud cover.
For the Australian market, Subaru Liberty is offered in LX, GX, RX, and Heritage model classes. In 1998 a special edition of "Bilstein Edition RX" was offered. These can be identified with the Bilstein badge on the right rear boot cover and the lower position due to Bilstein front and back struts. It also features Leather seats and door inserts along with MOMO sports leather steering wheel and 16in BBS alloys as standard equipment.
With the introduction of the second generation Legacy in Israel, the name Legacy was replaced by the B4 brand.

Third generation (1998-2004) - BE, BH, BT
Subaru launched Japan's third generation and world-market legacy in June 1998, while the North American model began production in late 1999 as a 2000 model year, also known as the BE model for sedans and bra for carts. The European-market and Japan models range from the 2.0-average, flat-4.0 to EZ30 flat-6 in the 3.0R model (European and Japanese level arrangements), with the twin turbo offered in the previous generation still offered on the performance model. In the US market, the third generation Legacy goes on sale with a standard 2.5Ã, L EJ251 Engine. In 2001 EZ30, a new design 3.0Ã, L H6 was offered at Outbacks. The engine now meets California LEV emissions standards.
Flat roof trains are no longer produced worldwide, and instead the elevated roof is used both for Legacy wagons and Legacy Outback. Daytime running lights are introduced on US models starting with Model Year 2000. Cabin air filters are available starting from the 2001 model mounted below and behind drawer doors.
Japanese-powered vehicles with twin turbo have a choice of manual or semi-automatic transmission called SportShift, which allows the driver to push the auto gear selector to the left, and then allows the driver to shift automatically like a manual transmission.
The US model ended in 2004 instead of 2003.
Generation fourth (2003-2009) - BL, BP
On May 23, 2003, Fuji Heavy Industries debuted a redesigned Legacy, known as BL for sedan models and BP for carriages. It was released worldwide in 2004, with Subaru Indiana Automotive commencing production in February 2004 for the North American market for the 2005 model year. The Legacy presented 2003-2004 Japan Car of the Year, Subaru's first win for the award after struggling from fierce competition from the Toyota Prius and Mazda RX-8. When sales begin in the US market, Lafayette Factory builds Legacy won 2005 International Car of the Year for the Most Reliable/Sedan of the Road & amp; Travel Magazine, 2005 Automobile All-Stars for All-Star Family Car from Automobile Magazine and The 2006 International Engine of the Year Award in the 2.0 liter to 2.5 liter category for EJ255 engines. Lance Armstrong was used as a spokesperson for both sedans and carts, and Sheryl Crow sang his 1996 hit "Everyday Is a Winding Road" in US market advertising.
The chassis was redesigned and rigid, and marked the return of a turbocharged engine to the North American Legacy, featuring a 2.5-liter unit from the North American Impreza WRX STI. Due to advances in turbocharger technology and tightening of emission standards, twin turbo setups are derived from the lineup. The Turbocharged model and H6 offer Subaru's first 5-speed automatic transmission, featuring licensed SportShift technology from Prodrive, Ltd.
The 2005 Legacy model for the US market is offered at 2.5i, 2.5i Limited, 2.5GT, and 2.5GT Limited. All trim levels are available as Sedan and Wagon. For 2006, regular GT is dropped, and 2.5i Special Edition is added to the queue.
On May 10, 2008, Japanese Spec Legacy can be equipped with a new collision avoidance feature, called EyeSight . It consists of a twin CCD camera, one on each side of the rearview mirror, which uses a human-like stereoscopic vision to assess distances and generally keep an eye on the driver. This system can help maintain safe distance on the highway, lane departure warning system, driver warning warning for various safety situations, and even supervise pedestrians. SI-Cruise has been integrated into the EyeSight feature as a driver's safety aid.
The Subaru EE Flat-4 diesel engine, the first in the world to be mounted on passenger cars, is offered in both Legacy and Outback sedans and trains, known as the Subaru Legacy 2.0D. The vehicle was released in the European Union from March 2008, and is offered with a 5-speed manual transmission only. The official introduction of the Legacy and Outback diesel was at Geneva AutoShow in March 2008.
Generation fifth (2009-2014) - BM, BR
In 2009, the Subaru Legacy concept is designed to commemorate the 20-year model, which is reported as the basis of the forthcoming Subaru fifth generation production version. The concept vehicle was introduced at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
Subaru Legacy's fifth generation 2010 production began in the last week of May 2009 at the Indiana location, and was launched at the 2009 New York Auto Show. According to the Subaru website in Japan, Legacy was introduced in Japan on May 20, 2009. The Legacy B4 2.5GT tS tuned by STi introduced to Japan June 12, 2010.
In May 2010, the collision avoidance feature "EyeSight" introduced in previous generations of Legacy was reintroduced to the Japan-spec Touring Wagon and Outback, and was awarded the "Best Technology" award from Japan. Automotive Hall of Fame at Japan Museum of Nature and Science. For the 2014 model year, EyeSight driver safety assistance has been installed optionally in all Legacy and Outback international vehicles.
New to this generation, the Lineartronic continuous variable transmission is used internationally on the EJ25 2.5 L flat-4 and EJ20 engines in some markets, with a 6-speed manual transmission that is also offered only in North America and Australia. 2.5GT uses a turbocharger with 6-speed manual transmission that is used exclusively in Japan and North America with Australia able to choose between 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic transmission; vehicles identified as "3.6R" using a flat-6 EZ36 engine with a conventional SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission. Lineartronic CVT transmission is also shared with the JDM-spec Subaru Exiga on the AWD model. PZEV Legacy 2.5i North America continues to be available in all 50 states, unlike other manufacturers that only sell PZEV certified vehicles in the state that have adopted California emissions standards.
Internationally, the EZ36 flat-6 engine is only used in Outback, but is also available in Legacy sedans in North America and Australia. Japanese spec vehicles have been discontinued using EJ25 engines that increase vehicle tax liability for Japanese buyers, offering EJ20 in turbo and non-turbo versions. "SI-Drive" is standard equipment on all Japanese-specified vehicles, and both 2.5GT Australia and 3.6R sedan, but not in North America. SI-Drive is standard on the international Outback with EZ36 except North America. Legacy wagons are available only as Outback in North America, while Legacy and Outback wagons are available in Japan, UK, Australia and Europe. In the UK, only the carts are offered, with a limited selection of engines on the Subaru EE20 or EJ25 turbodiesel. The EZ36 engine is available in the UK in 2010 MY Outbacks only. In Europe and certain Asian countries, EJ20 is still offered both in sedans and carts, in addition to EE20 turbodiesel and EJ25. Turbodiesel EE20 is available in Australia in Outback. EE20 European and British diesel, EJ20 and EJ25 gasoline engine meet Euro5 emission standards.
This is the ninth Subaru vehicle to offer CVT transmission; the first being Subaru Justy (1987-1994), followed by Subaru Rex (1987-1992), Subaru Vivio (1992-1998), Subaru Pleo (1998-present), Subaru R1 (2004-current) Subaru R2 5-door hatchback (2003-at this time), Subaru Sambar (1990-1995 only), and Subaru Exiga starting September 2009.
Sixth generation (2014-present) - BN, BS
The sixth generation of Subaru Legacy debuted at the Chicago Auto Show 2014, and began production for the 2015 model year.

EyeSight & amp; Driver Help Technology
EyeSight is an active Subaru security system that uses twin CCD cameras, simulating stereoscopic vision. It was first introduced in Japan only as Active Driving Assist (ADA) in 1999. When activated, it actively monitors its way through a camera mounted on the windshield, and can react to driving conditions and possibly prevent collisions. The EyeSight-equipped model achieved the highest rating in the IIHS front crash safety test. Unlike other manufacturers offering stereoscopic cameras for asset-driver purposes, the Vision camera system is not tied to the windscreen. So, if the windscreen is dirty on the inside, it may affect system performance.
The Adaptive Cruise Control serves to detect the speed and speed of the vehicle in front, and can automatically adjust the speed of the car running in accordance to maintain one of the four gaps that can be selected users. Pre-Collision braking uses the same camera to monitor vehicle activity up front, and alert the driver visually and audibly. If the driver fails to act, more signs will sound and the car will actively brake itself. According to IIHS, Legacy prevents collisions while traveling at 25 mph toward stop termination. When the car was first released for the 2015 model year, Lane Departure with Sway warning was included in the Vision package. This function keeps track of the driver's position in the track lane, and notifies the driver if they are floating off the track (if turn signal is used, this warning is not enabled), with Sway warning notified to the driver if they seem unable to stay centered on the road suggest them may be too sleepy. For the 2016 model year, Lane Keep Assist is added, which implements steering torque to prevent drivers from drifting the road. This function is active over 40 miles per hour. Also standard on all cars with Vision system is the help of adaptive fog lamps alternating and cornering and based on steering level.
Legacy also incorporates a Subaru side monitoring system as well. These systems include Blind Spot Alert, Lane Change Assist, and Cross-Traffic Alert System. Amber lights located in each rearview mirror remain stable if the vehicle is detected in the blind spot or approach at a speed fast enough to interfere with the path change, or flicker with additional warning if the driver shows a lane change or back from the parking lot with an approaching object.
All these features are available on 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, and 3.6R Limited models, with some standards in Limited and Limited 3.6R Limited models.

In 1990, Legacy was declared the number one man selling a 4 wheel drive car in the US by R.L. Polk & amp; Company, based on registration statistics for CYE 1989. According to AutoFacts Inc. AutoGuide, dated June 28, 1990, Legacy is the cheapest Sedan or Wagon that offers 4-wheel and ABS drives. The Canadian Automobile Journalists Association (AJAC) chose the Legacy "Best New Sedan 1990".
Performance improvements
The EZ series of flat-6-cylinder engines, used in current Legacy products, replaces the EG series found on Subaru SVX. Subaru has produced a high-performance version of the Legacy with the Bilstein suspension and tuning the turbocharged engine equivalent to the WRX STI homologation rally version (generating 205 kW (275 hp) on manufacturer figures for a 2.0 liter equivalent engine with manual transmission). Recently the 3.0L engine is moving closer to output 2.0Ã, L turbo and sharing the Bilstein suspension. Turbocharged engined 2.0 engine with Bilstein suspension named GT-B (for carts), or Spec B , or B4-RSK (for sedan ). The new 2003 model moved many models into B4 or even GT in some countries. In Australia, 2.5GT (SatNav) marks the top of the stack for the Legacy/Liberty range.
In North America, the early sporty models are known only as the Sport Sedan and Touring Wagon. The next model is given GT and GT Limited nomenclature. The Legacy Model 2006 produced a limited run of 500 Spec B models. Beginning in 2007, Spec B became a regular (though somewhat limited) production model. All Spec B models have an enhanced suspension system by Bilstein, navigation system (making Spec B the only pre-2010 MT Legacy to get one), exclusive (for Spec B) interiors, 18 "wheels, and additional aesthetic modifications. Spec B 2006 has a 5-speed manual transmission while the 2007-on model has a 6-speed manual transmission.
Racing
Rallying
Legacy was campaigned by the Subaru World Rally Team at the World Rally Championships and the British Rally Championships, with Prodrive's help, starting in 1990. Initially not considered a truly competitive model, but showing promise under my command Markku. Alen, who in 1991 managed to finish third place in the Swedish Rally. 1992 debuted an experienced Group B combination, Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, and WRC driver Ari Vatanen, paired up with Scottish rider Colin McRae on the rise for WRC Subaru's effort. The two second places are completed, one by each driver, reinforcing Subaru's commitment to the World Rally Championship, Legacy, and their drivers. 1993 became a breakthrough year for Subaru as Colin McRae and Ari Vatanen pushed Legacy to finish third place in the Swedish Rally and one-two put after the first leg of the Acropolis Rally. Prodrive boss David Garraway is eager to prove the potential of the new WRC Impreza car, but is accused of winning at Legacy before the Impreza can debut. In the eighth round of the New Zealand Rally, Subaru finally hit gold when McRae managed to hold Fran̮'̤ois Delecour at Ford Escort RS Cosworth to win. This is the last WRC year for Legacy, when the Impreza debuted at the next event, where he was second in Vatanen's hands.
Richard Burns was successful in various events by car during 1992 before joining the World Rally team to drive the Impreza in 1993. Alister McRae, Per Eklund, Possum Bourne and Hannu Mikkola also competed in Legacy during WRC participation.
Legacy remains an ever-present rival in demonstrations around the world. SCCA ProRally and Rally America's participation from many teams is impressive. Legacy and Impreza have many interchangeable parts that make entries very competent and reliable.
The Legacy, and Outback Stablemate, has won the Alcan Winter Rally several times; The first victory was in 1990 followed by another victory in 1992, 2002 and 2006.
Legacy in 1990 was the first Group N car ever to complete the WRC Safari Rally. The rally is considered to be the most exhausting rally in the world under the World Rally Championship. In 1990, 38 Rally Safaris had 59 total competitors, only 10 of them were able to reach the finish. The Legacy is the only Group N car capable of reaching the finish and is in 8th place overall.
Super GT
Similar to the Impreza that Team Cusco ran in previous years to 2008, a Legacy grand tourer car based on the fifth generation model has been built by R & D Sport for Super GT Japan series (GT300 class). It features a boxer-filled 4 turbo engine. The car also featured an all-wheel-drive in the first season but the layout was replaced with the FR layout in 2010, which season they got their first win at 39th Pokka Summer Special.
Note speed
On April 23, 1998, the Subaru Legacy III Generation set a new world speed record for a mass-produced turbocharged station carriage with a small engine (class 1600-cc-2000Ã, cc), recorded 270,532 km/h (168,101 mph) over one kilometer in Highway 10 in La Junta, Colorado. This record was previously set by the Second Generation Subaru Legacy in 1993 at 249,981 km/h (155,331 mph).
The original Legacy speed record was set between January 2 and January 21, 1989, with three Japanese-engine RS sedans at the Arizona Test Center outside Phoenix, Arizona. This solves the 100,000A FIA World Endurance Record by maintaining an average speed of 138,780 mph (223,345 km/h) for 447 hours, 44 minutes and 9,887 seconds, or 18.5 days. Pit stops are performed every two hours with driver and refuel changes, while tire changes are made at 96-hour intervals, or 13,400 miles (21,600 km) each driven.
World market release schedule
Models have usually been released to Japan and selected World markets such as New Zealand and Chile before the European and North American Continental markets, with the first two being the right drives and strong traditional markets for Subaru.
North America market release schedule
North America typically releases its model one to one and a half calendar years after Japan, due to the fact that all current Relics for the North American market have been built in Subaru of Indiana located in Lafayette, Indiana since 2004. Previously, all US Heritage was built well in the Indiana plant or ta factory, Gunma in Japan starting in 1989. In particular, the production of the fifth generation Legacy at SIA begins approximately at the same time in Gunma.
