Business model and site content
RealSelf.com is a website where viewers can review treatments and find a plastic surgeon or aesthetic doctor to perform the procedure. RealSelf also covers topics in dermatology, dentistry, and even LASIK. This site contains reviews, forums, consumer questions, and answers. Treatments rated "Worth It", "Not Worth It", with the option to talk about their experience.
By 2017, the site attracts 9.3 million unique users per month. It has been compared to hybrids from Yelp and Facebook. Many photos on the website contain nudity.
Controversies and lawsuits
In 2008, RealSelf was sued by Lifestyle Lift for copyright infringement. They claim that RealSelf posed as affiliated with Lifestyle Lifestyle, due to the use of their trademark. Lift Lifestyle has a number of negative reviews on RealSelf.com. RealSelf countersued, alleging that Lifestyles employs employees to write fake reviews on the site. The case reached a settlement agreement.
Lifestyle Lifter then fined $ 300,000 by the state of New York for hiring employees to post fake reviews to third-party review sites, including RealSelf.
