Bagel Head is a type of body modification pioneered in Canada and is practiced in the Japanese underground scene. This is a temporary forehead distortion (6 to 24 hours) of forehead created by saline drip and often shaped like a bagel or a donut. In 2012, after appearing on National Geographic TV specifically, this practice became the subject of sensationalism because news outlets around the world are misleading as "Japanese trends".

Origins

The bagel head procedure was brought to Japan in 2007 by Keroppy Maeda, who revived it in 2014 after he first saw it performed in Canada by pioneer Jerome Abramovitch. Since then, he has done about 10 times a year on special occasions like underground fetish parties. This procedure involves subjects who take a 300-400 cc medical grade salt injection to the middle forehead for a period of two hours, which is then often given depression at the center, leading to the name "bagel head". According to Maeda, "The body absorbs it from time to time so the next morning just returns to normal".

Sensationalism

This procedure is documented in an episode of the National Geographic Channel series of Taboo , organized and coordinated by the TV companies La Carmina and Pirates. Shortly after, the story was taken by international media, including Huffington Post, CNN, Mashable, The Sun, and Daily Mail, in the story which rotates the process as a strange new Japanese trend - when, in the words of La Carmina, "This is not a trend even among the most hardcore body modification types. It is expensive. It takes special equipment. Most Japanese people do not like it." I'm not even know about it. "The story spread was startling for the Japanese media, including Excite News, where a reporter stated," Having never heard of the 'bagel head', I am as surprised as anyone to see these young photographs. A very sweet forehead is transformed by a strange swelling. It looks like a space alien. I'm horrified to think, but according to news sites everywhere, this is Japan's latest trend? "Excessive coverage has baffled many Japanese - who have never seen or heard of practices outside of the international media.

Security issues

Amid the widespread media coverage is a report of potential health problems associated with the process. Omar Ibrahimi, a dermatologist with experience doing salt injections during cosmetic procedures, states that using a solution of too concentrated salt (hypertonic) can cause extreme dehydration. In addition, non-sterile saline solutions have the potential to cause bacterial or fungal infections. However, Maeda uses medical grade salt in practice. Ibrahimi also worries that repeated injections can cause sagging skin on the forehead - which Maeda does not think does matter how many times it's done. The safety of this procedure is also covered on episodes of The Doctors .
