The fifth season of The Hills, the American reality television series, consists of 20 episodes and is broadcast on MTV. Part I was aired from April 6, 2009, until May 31, 2009, while Part II aired from September 29, 2009, until December 1, 2009. The season was filmed primarily in Los Angeles, California, with additional footage in Crested Butte, Colorado, Oahu, Hawaii, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Its executive producer is Liz Gateley.
The Hills focuses on the lives of Lauren Conrad, Audrina Patridge, and Heidi Montag. During Part I, Montag and his girlfriend Spencer Pratt nearly ended their tumultuous relationship before deciding to marry. Mid-season end saw Conrad attend a wedding and make peace with Montag before making his final appearance in the series. During Part II, Conrad was replaced by fellow former Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County cast of Kristin Cavallari, whose interest in Justin Brescia resulted in a feud with Patridge.
Despite widespread rumors that Conrad wanted to leave the series at the end of the fourth season, the producers persuaded him to film ten additional episodes early in the fifth season to close his storyline. After Cavallari was announced as his replacement, ten additional episodes were ordered for the season. Although his contract confirmed the production of two seasons over the fifth, the series ended at the end of the sixth season in July 2010.

Synopsis
The fifth season continues because Lauren Conrad's displeasure with his spouse Heidi Montag's spouse friend Spencer Pratt hinders reconciliation between women. Montag became anxious after learning that Pratt had started a flirtatious relationship with a local bartender, Stacie Hall. After he reluctantly agreed to his ultimatum attending partner therapy, they became engaged and decided to get married. Under the impression that their relationship had been fixed, Montag gave Conrad the invitation to the ceremony, though Conrad initially refused the offer, feeling that his presence would justify a relationship he disagreed with. After receiving a phone apology from Pratt about previous sex tape rumors, Conrad made his final appearance in the series during the late-summer season, where he attended the wedding and made peace with Montag.
The second half of the season continued when Kristin Cavallari took the lead position in Conrad's absence. She becomes involved in hostilities with Audrina Patridge after starting a relationship with her ex-lover Justin Brescia. Upon returning from their honeymoon, Montag expressed interest in starting a family, while Pratt insisted against having children. This season ended when Patridge broke with Brescia, while Montag and Pratt decided not to have children for now, instead choosing to wait for years to come.

During the fifth season, Lauren Conrad served as narrator and series focal point. He continues to attend Fashion Institute of Design & amp; Trades and works for PR company Kelly's People's Revolution. Audrina Patridge remains a close friend of Conrad, and is employed by Epic Records. Heidi Montag is described as a friend of Patridge, constantly improving his relationship with his former roommate Conrad, and holding a position with Bolthouse Productions.
As in last season, the women's storyline was largely developed by a number of supporting cast members. Lo Bosworth is Conrad's best friend and housemate. Montag and his girlfriend Spencer Pratt are disliked by the majority of cast, which looks to break with the couple's antagonist antics. However, Conrad befriends their sisters, Holly Montag and Stephanie Pratt, through whom Montag sought to revive their friendship. Brody Jenner, Frankie Delgado, and Doug Reinhardt are friends along with the majority of players.
Justin Brescia and Jayde Nicole act as Patridge and Jenner who become active partners again/off-again. Stacie Hall is portrayed as a flirty bartender who makes Montag tension and Pratt's male relationships. Charlie Smith proved to be a close friend of Pratt's men. At work, Cutrone is shown as a Conrad boss, while Brent Bolthouse serves as Montag's boss. Kimberly Brandon and Chiara Kramer are featured as colleagues and friends of Montag and Patridge.
After Kristin Cavallari became the focal point of the series in the second half of the season, the dynamics between cast members were adjusted in response to Conrad's absence. Cavallari himself befriends Montag and Hall. Patridge became the enemy of Cavallari after their hostilities began, while Brescia became a short love of Cavallari. The storyline was also modified to describe Jenner as Cavallari's ex-girlfriend, and began to portray romantic tension.
Critical reception
Scripting allegations
The Hills are often criticized for appearing to fabricate many of the plot, and were especially criticized during the fifth season. One source of suspicion arose when Conrad was shown to have moved from his home the day before the marriage of Montag and Pratt. However, Conrad and Bosworth had completely left the property a few months earlier in January, which led to speculation that greeting the wedding as "the next day" had been planned ahead of time.
After leaving The Hills, Conrad appeared in The View in June 2009, where he was asked how he felt about Prato's apology involving sex tape rumors. He replied, "To be honest, I was not on the other side of the call, it was filmed and I was not on the other end, so I did not know it until, so, no, I never got an apology. At the marriage of Montag and Pratt, it was depicted in the series as though Conrad and Cavallari were unhappy with each other's presence, although the latter commented that they gave each other "big hugs, and that's it".
Cavallari also stated that when he joined The Hills, it worked and the drama was sold I think that's why they brought me in, because I know what works. " Cavallari then informs Ryan Seacrest that his relationship with Jenner and Brescia was made.
US. television ratings
The second half of the fifth season, as well as the first episode of Cavallari as the main character, aired to 2.1 million viewers, decreasing 30 percent from first-round premieres.
