Gray Anatomy is the American television drama television series aired on March 27, 2005, at American Broadcasting Company (ABC) as a mid-season replacement. Fictional series focuses on the surgical, resident, and physician apprentices present, as they develop into experienced doctors while trying to maintain personal life and relationships. The title is a game in Gray's Anatomy , the first human anatomy textbook published in 1858 in London and written by Henry Gray. Shonda Rhimes developed the pilot and continued writing for the series; he is also one of the executive producers, along with Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Krista Vernoff, Rob Corn, Mark Wilding, and Allan Heinberg. Although the series is set in Seattle (in Seattle Grace, which became known as the Gray-Sloan Memorial Hospital), the film was filmed primarily in Los Angeles, California.
The series is designed to be diverse and use blind-color casting. It's about the title character, Dr. Meredith Gray, played by Ellen Pompeo, first appearing as an apprentice. The original cast consists of nine actors starring: Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, T.R. Knight, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey. The series follows Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo), the daughter of a distinguished surgeon named Ellis Gray, after her admission to the residency program at Seattle Grace Fiction Hospital. The new young doctors in the residency program include Lexie Gray (Chyler Leigh), Meredith's half brother. He was killed with Sloan in the eight season finals. Other additions include Leah Murphy (Tessa Ferrer), who departs towards the end of the tenth season but returns on the thirteenth; Shane Ross (Gaius Charles), who departs with Yang at the end of the tenth season; Stephanie Edwards (Jeremy Hinton), who resigned during the thirteen seasons; Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), a doctor who started a romantic relationship with Karev; Andrew Deluca (Giacomo Gianniotti), the love interest of Meredith's half brother, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), who also served as cardio chief; and Benjamin Warren (Jason George), an resident anesthesiologist, who must balance his own desire for success with his wife's new role, Miranda Bailey as Head of Surgery. Eleven seasons saw Derek Shepherd's departure, and in season twelve, attending cardio surgeon Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) joined the show. In the thirteen seasons, the hospital saw a shakeup when attending sports medicine/orthopedic surgeon Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk) was hired as an education consultant to change the residency program; he was fired following an explosion at the hospital. In the early episode of the fourteenth season, Riggs left the series to start life with Owen's long-lost brother; at the end of the season, Kepner and Robbins also left the show.

Shonda Rhimes wanted to create an event she would enjoy, and thought it would be interesting to create an event about "smart women competing against each other".
When asked how he decided to develop a medical drama, Rhimes replied:
The series was launched to ABC Entertainment, which gave the green light. The show was taken as a seasonal substitute for Boston Legal in the 2005 television season. Francie Calfo, executive vice president of development at ABC Entertainment, commented that ABC was looking for a medical event that unlike any other aired at the time. He showed it
"[m] edition shows are very difficult, and it's hard to figure out where we can be different, but where others speed up their medical performances, [Rhimes] finds ways to slow it down, so you can know the characters. strong for that. "
Rhimes originally contained Gray's Anatomy as a statement against racism. She works to create shows featuring diverse racial acts that allow viewers to connect with characters regardless of race. When creating a character, as well as writing the first script, the series writer has no character description in mind, and hopes to provide the best actor available for each section. Rhimes says that if the network is not allowed to create a character this way, he must be hesitant to move forward with this series. The role of women in particular is developed as a multi-faceted character.

"I want to create a world where you feel as if you are watching a very real woman, most of the women I see on TV do not look like people I actually know, they feel like ideas about women They never got to be evil or competitive or hungry or angry, they are often just loving wives or good friends, but who will be a bitch? The title of the show, Gray Anatomy , is designed as a play of words: a reference to both the classic English textbooks of Henry Gray, Gray Anatomy (first published in 1858 and still in print) , and the title character of Dr. Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo). Before the series was launched on March 27, 2005, some early releases were shown to close friends and family of producers and actors. This event is scheduled to run in the Boston Legal time slot for four weeks.
But his high ratings and impressions resulted in ABC keeping them in the slot for the rest of the season. ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson commented on the scheduling changes: "In the end we decided that, without sufficient time or marketing expenses to devote to a good move showing at the end of the season, we will continue to let Gray's Anatomy < ] build up tremendous momentum until May. "Before it was broadcast, it was announced that the event title would be changed from Gray's Anatomy to Complications, though this did not happen.

Gray Anatomy is produced by ShondaLand, in collaboration with The Mark Gordon Company, and ABC Studios (formerly Touchstone Television). Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Krista Vernoff, Mark Gordon, Rob Corn and Mark Wilding all served as executive producers throughout the series. In subsequent seasons, Steve Mulholland, Kent Hodder, Nancy Bordson, James D. Parriott, and Peter Horton also became executive producers, with Allan Heinberg joining the show in 2006 in this role. In season eight, executive producers are Rhimes, Beers, Gordon, Vernoff, Corn, Wilding, and Heinberg.
Rhimes is the serial head writer, or the most prolific writer. He often promotes the show by answering fan questions on his Twitter account. Other members of the writing staff are Vernoff, Wilding, Peter Nowalk, Stacy McKee, William Harper, Zoanne Clack, Tony Phelan, Joan Rater, and Debora Cahn. From the second to the seventh season, the authors maintain a blog entitled Gray Matter , in which the author of an episode discusses the background of the writing.
Directors vary by episode, with Rob Corn directing most often, followed by Tom Verica. Horton, Edward Ornelas, and Jessica Yu have also directed a large number of episodes. Cast Chandra Wilson and Kevin McKidd have directed several episodes.
Gray's Anatomy has been edited by Susan Vaill since the beginning of the show, and David Greenspan was named editor in 2006. Director directors Linda Lowy and John Brace have been part of the production team since 2005. The production design is led by Donald Lee Harris , aided by art director Brian Harms, and costume design led by Mimi Melgaard. Working with Melgaard, Thomas Houchins is watching the costumes, Ellen Vieira is a makeup artist, and Jerilynn Stevens serves as a hairdresser. The Director of Photography is Herbert Davis. The music coordinator is Danny Lux. Karen Lisa Pike, M.D. is a medical consultant, along with Linda Klein, an RN. Production staff are part of the Gray Anatomy softball team that competes with other television shows, such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation .
Casting
Gray Anatomy uses color blind casting techniques, resulting in diverse racial ensembles. Each role is cast without a predetermined race of characters, preserving the vision of Rhimes diversity. Production staff began casting with the title character of the program, Meredith Gray, whom Rhimes said to be a difficult role to cast. "I keep saying we need a girl like that girl from Moonlight Mile," Rhimes said, "and after a while they're like, 'We thought we could get that girl from Moonlight Mile . "Next to the cast, Sandra Oh (Dr. Cristina Yang), was initially invited to audition for Bailey's character, but was pressed to read for Cristina's role instead. Many actors read for Dr. Derek Shepherd, but when Patrick Dempsey reads for that part, "he's just perfect", according to Rhimes.
The only character developed with racial descriptions in mind is Dr. Miranda Bailey, described by Chandra Wilson. His character was first described as a small blonde with curly hair, but when Wilson started talking, Rhimes reported: "[Wilson] is exactly who Miranda is." James Pickens Jr. selected to appear as Dr. Richard Webber in the pilot series and the first season. Katherine Heigl wants to play Dr. Izzie Stevens as a brunette, but was asked to maintain natural blond hair for the part. Isaiah Washington, who plays Dr. Preston Burke, originally read for the Shepherd role, but was cast as Burke, since the original actor to play Burke had to resign. T. R. Knight signed for the pilot as Dr. George O'Malley, hoping that the role may be short-lived, because he likes that the character is multi-faceted. Complementing first season players is Justin Chambers as Dr. Alex Karev.
The second season marks the introduction of doctors Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez). They originally acted as repetitive characters, but both were given star billing at the opening of the third season. Ramirez is issued after the ABC executive offers his role in the networking event of his choice; Dane had previously auditioned unsuccessfully for a role in the pilot episode. Dr Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) also took part in the second season, after making guest appearances in season one.
In October 2006, Washington allegedly insulted the Knight with homophobic insults, during an on-set dispute with Dempsey, and ABC terminated Washington's contract at the end of the third season. Washington returned for guest appearance in season 10. At the end of the third season, Walsh left the show to pursue the Gray Anatomy spin-off, Personal Exercise, but continued to make a guest look.
Chyler Leigh joined the cast as the lead character in the fourth season as Dr. Lexie Gray, Meredith's step brother. Leigh appeared as a guest star in the last two episodes of the third season. At Leigh's selection for Lexie's role, Rhimes said: "Chyler stands out... It's like he could be Meredith's sister, but he has a very interesting depth."
Dr. Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith), who first appeared in Gray's Anatomy in the second season, returns as a regular series in the fourth season. Shortly after the announcement that Smith would become a regular member of the player, Michael Ausiello's Entertainment Weekly ', reported that his character, Hahn, would depart from Gray Anatomy on 6 November 2008. E! Online Kristin Dos Santos affirms that Smith's dismissal of the show has been forced by the ABC network, as part of an attempt to "de-gay" Gray Anatomy
Season five was introduced to actor Kevin McKidd (Dr Owen Hunt), who signed as a regular series after initially cast for a certain arc story. In addition, Jessica Capshaw (Dr. Arizona Robbins) was originally introduced to the three-episode arc, but received a contract extension until the end of the season; and then made a regular series in the sixth season.
Knight left the show at the end of season five, citing unhappiness with the development and lack of screen time for his character. Immediately after Knight's departure, Entertainment Weekly reported that Heigl has not returned to the set on schedule after his maternity leave. It was later confirmed that Heigl would not return to the show at all.
Kim Raver, who acts as a recurring character. Teddy Altman in the sixth season, awarded a star billing in the next season. Sarah Drew (Dr. April Kepner) and Jesse Williams (Dr. Jackson Avery), both of whom made their series debuts as recurring characters in the sixth season, and received star billing in the seventh.
The original six actors' contract expires after season eight, but in May 2012, Pompeo, Oh, Dempsey, Chambers, Wilson, and Pickens renew their contracts with a show for two more years. At the end of the eighth season, Leigh's character Lexie Gray departed from the show at Leigh's request, and with Rhimes's approval. Raver's character, Teddy Altman, was also written out of the show during the eight-season final. Rhimes said that Raver had been offered a contract extension, but was refused.
In July 2012, Dane (Sloan) confirmed that he was leaving the show to pursue another project; he made his final appearance in the first two episodes of the ninth season. With the start of season 10, Camilla Luddington, Jeremy Hinton, Gaius Charles and Tessa Ferrer were introduced to the show as a regular subscription. They were first introduced to the show in season 9 as a new intern. On August 13, 2013, Oh (Cristina) announces that the tenth season of the event will be his final season. In March 2014 it was announced that Isaiah Washington, who plays Preston Burke in the first three seasons of the show, would make a guest appearance to coincide with the departure of the regular series Sandra Oh, his former interest on screen. Both the Charles and Ferrer contracts are renewed for season 11.
On 2 May 2014 it was announced that, in addition to Pompeo and Dempsey, all original cast members - other than Sandra Oh - signed a two-year contract, extending their contract through the 11 and 12 seasons. Despite joining the series in the second season, Sara Ramirez was on the negotiating schedule the same as the first season player and also signed a new two-year contract. On April 23, 2015, Dempsey left the show during the eleventh season on the show, despite the fact that he still has a year left in his contract. On the eve of the twelfth season of the finals, May 19, 2016, Sara Ramirez announces that he will leave the show after the decision not to renew his contract.
On 17 January 2018, it was announced by ABC that Ellen Pompeo's contract has been renewed through season 16. Not only does the contract extension ensure that Pompeo will return as Meredith Gray, but it makes him a producer of Gray's Anatomy and co- executive of Station 19. The deal will make Pompeo the highest paid actress currently on the dramatic TV series, with her earning $ 575,000 per episode and over $ 20 million per year. On March 8, 2018, it was announced that regular teams Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew would not be back for the fifteenth season after executive producers decided to let them go. In May 2018, it was confirmed that Kim Raver, who made guest appearances back in the fourteen seasons, will once again become a regular series, starting with the fifteenth season.
Make movie location and techniques
Rhimes considers the setting of a medical drama in her hometown, Chicago, but eventually decides to go with Seattle, to distinguish Chicago's "Anatomy Gray" from Chicago's
Fisher Plaza, which is the headquarters of the former Fisher Communications (since joining the Sinclair Broadcasting Group) and ABC-affiliated ABC-affiliated radio and television station, is used for some exterior shots of the Gray-Sloan Memorial Hospital. In particular, the air ambulance landed on the KOMo-TV newscop's helipad. This indicates that the hospital is close to the Space Needle (located just across the street from Fisher Plaza), Seattle Monorail, and other local landmarks.
But, the hospitals used for most of the exterior and some interior shooting are not in Seattle; the scene was taken at the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center in North Hills, California, and the occasional shots from the interior walkway above the lobby show the distant mountains of California in the distance. The outside of Meredith Gray's home, also known as House Intern, is real. In the event, Gray's home address is 613 Harper Lane, but this is not an actual address. The physical home is located at 303 W. Comstock St., at Queen Anne Hill, Seattle, Washington. Most scenes are recorded at Prospect Studios in Los Feliz, just east of Hollywood, where the set of Gray's Anatomy occupies six sound stages. Several outer scenes were taken at Warren G. Magnuson Park in Seattle. Some of the props used are functioning medical devices, including MRI machines.
When asked about the operating room scene, Sarah Drew offers this:
We work with the Bovine organ, which is a cow organ. The smell was disgusting and made us all vomit. And we use the actual soldering tool to soldering the organs. It smelled like burnt meat. There is also a lot of silicon and blood, red jello mixed with blood and chicken fat. This is very dirty.
Costumes are used to distinguish between surgeons who come in, who wear dark blue scrubs, and residents, who wear light blue scrubs. The series is filmed with a single camera setting, like many dramas. Gray's Anatomy is often filmed using the "walking and talking" technique, popularized on television with series like St. Elsewhere , ER , and The West Wing .

Gray ' s Anatomy follows a surgical and resident internship at the ferocious Gray-Sloan Memorial Hospital (formerly Seattle Grace Hospital, Season 1-6, Seattle Hospital Grace Mercy West , Season 6-9, and then the Gray-Sloan Memorial Hospital, Season 9-now), as they gradually evolved as experienced doctors, with help from competent mentors and heads of operations. Each installment, usually, begins with a voice-over narration from Meredith Gray or a regular season, which epitomizes the episode theme. Each season tends to represent the academic year of the physician, with each year completing eligible populations at a higher level in the field of surgery. The season will always end in the end, usually associated with dramatic events such as death or character departure. Most installments revolve around the daily lives of doctors as surgeons, but the show also emphasizes their personal lives, not professionals. The series sets aside medical ethics to focus on character development and relationships. Although doctors treat their patients' diseases, often through complex operations, they display a competitive spirit and seek praise.
Upon arrival at the hospital every morning, residents can argue about who gets challenged from certain patients who have arrived that day. A hospital boss gives a case, often causing tension between the occupants and their superiors. In every episode there is a shift from the doctors who interact with their patients, to the scene with their co-workers. After one case, each doctor diagnoses the patient, with the help of the treating doctor, which usually leads to surgery. The surgeons tend to form personal connections with their patients, with patients often delivering messages to their doctors, who inadvertently relate to the doctor's private life. The show features a growing relationship between physicians, whether friendly or sexual, that can result in a conflict between their personal and professional lives. Emotional scenes are often accompanied by an indie rock background song, something that has become the hallmark of the series. At the end of each episode, one of the characters provides another voice-over, usually contrasting or following up on the beginning.

The five characters first introduced in the inaugural series, as a surgical intern, are Gray, Karev, O'Malley, Stevens, and Yang. They were originally guided by Bailey, a senior resident who became the Chief Resident of the hospital, and then the general surgeon who was present, in season six. The surgical program was initially led by Head of Surgery, Richard Webber, who had a pre-existing personal relationship with Meredith, had an affair with his mother when Meredith was a child. In hiring Webber attended neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd, nicknamed 'McDreamy' by residents, and attended cardiothoracic surgeon Preston Burke. Shepherd was introduced as Meredith's love interest, while Burke started a relationship with Yang.
Introduced in the second season of the show were obstetricians-gynecologists and neonatal surgeons, Addison Montgomery, plastic surgeon Mark Sloan (nicknamed 'McSteamy' by apprentices), from New York, and orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres. Montgomery is the Shepherd's wife who arrives in Seattle seeking reconciliation with her, Sloan is a former friend of Shepherd, who helped her marriage break with an affair with Montgomery, while Torres was introduced as love-interest, and finally wife to O 'Malley. The second episode of the back of the third season introduces Lexie Gray, Meredith's half-brother who suddenly decides to resume his apprenticeship at Seattle's Grace Hospital after his mother's sudden death, and starts the relationship again, again with Sloan. Burke and Yang, who had been involved, tried to plan their marriage, while Montgomery left the show at the end of the third season, moving to California, looking for a new life. The third season of the final shows Burke out of the show, having left Yang on the altar on their wedding day.
Gray, Yang, Karev, and Stevens were all promoted to the population, in a four-premiere season, while O'Malley was forced to repeat his apprentice year, having failed an internship exam. Furthermore, Torres and O'Malley divorced each other, as he had a sexual relationship with Stevens, initially hiding him from Torres. At the start of the fourth season, cardiothoracic surgeon Erica Hahn became Torres's lover. During the fifth season, Hahn departs from the series, and O'Malley takes his internship exam, passes, joins his fellow doctors as a resident. Two new characters were introduced, former US Army trauma surgeon Dr. Owen Hunt, and a surgeon. Arizona Robbins. The hunt became a love-interest for Yang, while Robbins became a love-interest for Torres. When Stevens was diagnosed with stage four metastatic melanoma, he and Karev got married at the end of the fifth season. In addition, Meredith and Shepherd were married, with their promise written on post-it paper.
O'Malley died at the sixth-season premiere, due to an injury he suffered from being hit by a bus, and Stevens left Seattle after being diagnosed with cancer and after a lack of communication between her husband and Karev after the Seattle Grace merger with Mercy West. Several new characters were introduced when Seattle Grace Hospital merged with Mercy West. The residents of April Kepner and Jackson Avery both moved to Seattle Grace Hospital from Mercy West, and the latter entertained a brief relationship with Lexie Gray, until he reunited with Mark Sloan. Furthermore, Teddy Altman was introduced as the new Head of Cardiothoraxic Surgery. At the end of season six, a husband who accompanied him preceded the hospital shooting party, injuring Karev, Shepherd, and Hunt, and killing residents of Charles Percy and Reed Adamson. In the emotional echo of the shooting, Hunt and Yang are suddenly married, not wanting to risk separation. Torres and Robbins finally married, inaugurated by Bailey. In season eight, Webber backed down and allocated his work to Hunt. As the last year of residency for Meredith, Yang, Karev, Avery, and Kepner is almost over, doctors plan to move to various hospitals to pursue their special careers. However, all plans were suspended when some doctors from Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital were involved in a plane crash, killing Lexie and endangering Meredith, Shepherd, Yang, Robbins, and Sloan. At the end of the eighth season, Altman was politely dismissed by Hunt as he struggled to decide whether or not to take on a job as Chief of the United States Army Medical Command (MEDCOM). In the nine premiere season, Sloan died of a sustained injury from a plane crash following a brief recurrence of temporary health (spikes) and remaining characters working through their post traumatic stress and loss of Arizona Robbins limbs by demanding Seattle Grace Mercy West as a responsible hospital placing surgeon on plane. The season continues with the struggle of lawsuits and hostilities created in the hospital, Yang and Hunt finally divorced to help the lawsuit. The doctors on the plane won the lawsuit, but the fee went bankrupt in the hospital. They all club together and buy Seattle Grace Mercy West, with the help of the Harper Avery Foundation, and they become the Board of Directors, once called "Gray-Sloan 7".
