Lip enlargement is a type of cosmetic surgery or non-surgical procedure that aims to change the appearance of the lips by increasing their fullness through enlargement using fillers.

Histori

Lips filled with a firm border are often associated with beauty and youth. Tribal societies around the world have introduced a variety of ingredients into and through the upper and lower lip of all genders to enhance beauty. The size of the perceived ideal lips varies over time and in different cultures.

Around the year 1900, the surgeon tried to inject paraffin to the lips without success. Liquid silicon is used for lip enlargement, starting in the early 1960s but abandoned thirty years later because it is common - and then, unfounded - a fear about the effects of silicon on general health.

Around 1980, injectable syrup collagen was introduced into the cosmetic surgery market and became the standard used to measure other injection fillers. However, the collagen does not last long and requires an allergy test, causing patients to wait at least three weeks before another appointment, after which further waiting is required to see cosmetic results.

Currently, fillers containing hyaluronic acid such as Restylane and Juvederm have attracted the attention of consumers and doctors in Europe, North America, South America and Australia.

Materials and techniques

In the late 1990s, with the great popularity of surgical rejuvenation and improved cosmetic surgery procedures around the world, more substances, along with biocompatible materials commonly used in other medical applications over the years, became available to surgeons for use in enhancing the shape thinning or defective lips features more fat and attractive.

Some of the first lip augmentation substances used are:

  • Autologen , a dermal injection material made from the patient's own skin. There is no risk of allergy but the results are very temporary because the body quickly absorbs the material.
  • Collagen requires an allergy test because the material is extracted from bovine hide. It lasts anywhere from four weeks to three months because it is also absorbed into the body. However, allergy tests should be observed for four weeks.
  • Dermalogen is taken from the skin of the patient - and through laboratory processes - is made into high-concentration collagen that can be injected into the lips. Some studies show it lasts a bit longer than collagen.
  • Alloderm is a donor network taken from the carcass and then denatured, purified and treated to remove cells that can pass through the disease. Under local anesthesia, Alloderm is placed into the mucosa, or body, from the lips in a small roll to make it larger. Alloderm can also be placed into the vermilion, the pink lip area, to provide sharper definition and borders.
  • Radiance , a synthetic solution, produced in laboratories containing calcium hydroxylapatite (bone) suspended in a gel that has been used safely in the drug for many years. Some studies show that Radiance can last between three and five years. A researcher (Tzikas) found in a Radiance study in 90 patients who 59 percent felt when injected, moderate to severe pain lost two to five minutes later. But this substance yields an average of two years with some patients reporting a sustained swelling effect for three to five years. Of the 90 patients, four surgical interventions were required due to nodules on the lips.
  • Gore-Tex implants . In medical use, Gore-Tex is known as EPTFE, or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene and, commercially as Advanta, UltraSoft, and SoftForm. EPTFE is sent to a surgeon in strips that have a diameter of 1/16 inch (2.4 mm) and 3/16 (3.4 mm).

Current popular procedure

Since 2000, more products and techniques have been developed to make lips enlargement more effective and patient-friendly. The relative ease of injections is because surgeons use small needles 30 and 31 (about as thick as a dozen human hairs) used to inject highly sensitive lips. However, topical anesthesia is often used for lip augmentation procedures.

Some of these new techniques and substances are included.

  • Fat transfer . Surgeons harvest through liposuction or fat excision of patients from a place in the body where it can be spared and either injected or surgically placed into the lips. Surgical applications usually require general anesthesia.
  • Restylane , non-animal and clear gels are reportedly very close to the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in the body. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were 778,000 cases of Restylane injection in 2006, the last year in which statistics were available. Substance usually lasts for six months and, sometimes, longer. While Juvederm is chemically very close to Restylane; many surgeons report the first slightly smoother to inject.
  • Artecoll . Both Artecoll and ArteFill are not used to inject lips due to heavy substances and will look white through the thin skin of the lips. In addition, both products contain small microspheres known as PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) that remain in the face permanently. In cases where Artecoll has been used around the edges of the lips to remove fine lines and wrinkles, some patients have reported annoying nodules or small bumps. In some cases, an operation is required to remove Artecoll.

Non-surgical alternatives

  • Lip gloss is a cosmetic product used to make lips look fuller. These products work by irritating the lip skin with ingredients such as Capsaicin. This makes the lips swell slightly, while creating a fuller lips appearance.
  • Sucking Pump , a special device for lips using vacuum pumping to raise blood pressure on each lips and pulling it slightly out, making it quite an instrument to adjust the right lip/lip length in a slow step by step by step.

Risks and side effects

Several studies have found that lipid transplantation of the lips is one of the best methods of keeping lips semi-permanent and softer. When the lips are full, the results can be comic, often supplying food for tabloid newspapers and unusual websites. This view is sometimes referred to as 'scowl of trout'. Overly aggressive injections may cause temporary lumpiness too little can cause bulges.

General reactions can range from redness, swelling or itching at the injection site. Other possible complications are bleeding, uneven lips, implant or extrusion movements, when the implant penetrates the outer surface of the skin. The usual swelling and bruising may last from a few days to a week.

Some patients are allergic to local anesthesia such as lidocaine and may not need to consider lip shots. Some react badly to skin tests that patients must take before receiving collagen. Other patients who have to abandon the procedure for the lips include those who have active skin conditions such as cold sores, blood clotting problems, infections, scarring of lips or certain diseases such as diabetes or lupus which leads to slower healing. Patients with facial nerve disorders, severe hypertension or recurrent herpes simplex lesions should also avoid lip augmentation. As in all operations, smokers complicate the completion of their procedures as well as the speed of healing.

Fat transfer may last longer than other injected substances but may have clotting or scarring effects. The length of time fat transfer can take place on the lips is often determined by how much the area moves and how close to the main blood supply. In addition, donor fat should be harvested from other areas of the patient's body that leaves the other - despite minor injuries - surgery. However, the donor fat harvesting technique has been very good.

Discussion

Cosmetic surgery providers often advise their patients that many options are now there to improve the appearance of the lips. Most practitioners also recognize that successful lip enlargement depends largely on the skill of the provider, with skills derived from years of experience injecting the lips of many types of patients. In addition, the surgeon must master various injection techniques. With many injections, the benefit for the patient is to immediately return to normal normal activity. Some surgeons offer a procedure known as surgical flap augmentation in which a small piece of skin near the lips or inside the mouth is cut and added to the lips. However, this technique does not increase the volume and only reaches a few outer lip bumps.
