An MTV Video Music Award (commonly abbreviated as VMA ) is an award given by the MTV cable channel to honor the best in the medium of the music video. Originally conceived as an alternative to the Grammy Awards (in the video category), the annual MTV Video Music Awards ceremony is often called "Super Bowl for youth", an acknowledgment of VMA's ceremonial abilities to attract millions of youth from teens to 20-somethings each year. In 2001, VMA has become a coveted award. The statue given to the winner is an astronaut on the moon, one of MTV's early representations, and is called "moonman" everyday. However, in 2017 Chris McCarthy, President of MTV, declared that the statue would be called "Moon Man" ever since. The statue is conceived by Manhattan Design - also the original MTV logo designer - based on the 1981 "Top of the Hour" animation by Fred Seibert, produced by Alan Goodman, and produced by Buzz Potamkin at Buzzco Associates. The statue is now made by a New York company, the Community Award. Since the 2006 ceremony, viewers can choose their favorite videos in all general categories by visiting the MTV website.

The annual VMA ceremony takes place before the end of summer and is held in late August or mid September, and is broadcast live on MTV, along with simulcast on the MTV sister network to cancel internal competition. The first VMA ceremony was held in 1984 at Radio City Music Hall of New York City. Ceremonies are usually held in New York City or Los Angeles. However, the ceremony has also been held in Miami and Las Vegas.

Paula Abdul was nominated for six awards, taking four wins. He performed a seven minute medley of "Straight Up", "Cold Hearted", and "Forever Your Girl" singles.

When Madonna won the Audience Choice Award (sponsored by Pepsi-Cola) for her "Like a Prayer" video, she thanked Pepsi-Cola in her acceptance speech "for causing much controversy". Pepsi-Cola has paid Madonna $ 5 million to appear in an ad that will feature the premiere of "Like a Prayer" in the world; ad, entitled "Make a Wish", describes Madonna taking Pepsi and watching a home video of her eighth birthday. The tone to be conveyed commercially contrasts with the music video. When Pepsi executives saw the video, they pulled the ad only after two airs, in an attempt to secede from Madonna. It also marked Kiss's last TV appearance with Eric Carr, before Carr's death in November.

1992 : In the 1992 event, MTV requested Nirvana to feature "Smells Like Teen Spirit", while the band itself has hinted at playing the new song "Rape Me" and "tourette's". Network executives continue to push for "Teen Spirit" but ultimately offer the band the option to play "Teen Spirit" or "Lithium", which the band seems to accept. At the show, Nirvana started playing, and Kurt Cobain played some of the first chords of the song, "Rape Me", much to the horror of MTV executives, before continuing their regular "Lithium" performance. Near the end of the song, frustrated that his amp has stopped functioning, bassist Krist Novoselic decided to throw his bass into the air for a dramatic effect. He misjudged the landing, and the bass finally bounced off his forehead, forcing him to stumble off the stage in a daze.

Behind the stage, before the show, Guns N 'Roses vocalist Axl Rose challenged Cobain to fight after him, his wife and Hole frontwoman Courtney Love and Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, teasing him. At the end of Nirvana's appearance, while Cobain contaminated the band's equipment, Dave Grohl ran to the microphone and shouted "Hi, Axl! Where's Axl?" many times. Video Guns N 'Roses' for the ballad "November Rain" won the MTV Video Music Award for best cinematography. During the show, the band performed "November Rain" with singer Elton John. Because of the disagreements Rose had with Cobain, just before the "November Rain" show, Cobain spit on the keys he thought were Axl pianos. Cobain later revealed that he was surprised to see Elton John playing on the piano he spit on. During commercial breaks, Alien 3 Pepsi ads are displayed.

Howard Stern's shock-jock radio emerged as Fartman, Stern's super radio hero, dressed in exposing butt-apparent costumes inspired by Prince's outfit the previous year. 1995-1999

1995 : At the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, Hole performed the song "Violet" from their major-label debut album Live Through This. This was one of the first major television shows given by frontney Courtney Love after the death of her husband Kurt Cobain and the death of band bassist Kristen Pfaff in 1994. Before starting the song, Love dedicated the show to her husband and many people in the recently deceased entertainment industry: This is for Kurt, and Christian, and River, and Joe, and today Joni Abbott, this is for you. " Abbott worked in the Talent Relations department at MTV and recently committed suicide. The song ends with Love throwing his guitar, tapping the microphone standing into the crowd and pushing the speaker-box with Eric Erlandson bandmate before exiting the stage. Love also caused excitement when he interrupted post-ceremonial interviews with Kurt Loder and Madonna by throwing make-up compacts at the singers as they broadcast outside the venue.

Michael Jackson performed for over fifteen minutes to medley his main songs, including "Scream", and danced his signature moves, including robots, moonwalk and "Bankhead Bounce" which are relatively unknown. While Slash accompanied Jackson and played guitar in "Black or White and Early Billie Jean." A few weeks later, the public learned that Van Halen would not be reunited with Roth. Roth released a statement apologizing to fans, stating that he was an unwitting participant in a publicity stunt to sell more copies of his biggest hits album, Best Of Vol. 1 , and that he has been led to believe that he rejoined Van Halen. The next day, Eddie and Alex Van Halen released a statement, stating that they had been honest with Roth, and never made him believe that he had been rehired.

Oasis featured "Champagne Supernova", with lead vocalist Liam Gallagher making rude gestures to Noel's brother as he plays his guitar solo, then spitting beer across the stage before storming.

Alanis Morissette performed "Your House", a hidden song from his bestseller album "Jagged Little Pill". The show had nothing to do with the year 1995. The beginning and ending of the song is sung by acappella, while the rest is played with just one guitar on stage. In the end, Morissette almost cried.

The newly reunited Kiss closed the show with a special concert broadcast from the Brooklyn Bridge.

1997 : In 1997, Pat Smear announced that he left Foo Fighters in the middle of their show and presented his successor, Franz Stahl, who has been a member of the Scream band with Dave Grohl.

The song features Puff Daddy, Biggie's widow, Faith Evans, and R & amp; B 112. The song takes samples of The Police's hit song "Every Breath You Take." All of these artists performed the song with former Sting Police vocalist.

The strange pair of presenters Martha Stewart and Busta Rhymes of the year drew a lot of conversation in the media, with some pretty good chemistry on screen, albeit from a very different background. They presented the best dance video award to Spice Girls for their music video "Wannabe," who wore a black strap on their left forearm as a sign of sorrow for Diana, the death of Princess Wales before the event.

While receiving the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist of the Year for "Sleep To Dream", Fiona Apple appealed to its listeners not to be captivated by the celebrity culture. He proclaimed, "the world is bullshit" and quotes Maya Angelou, saying "go with yourself." Although his comments were generally greeted with cheers and applause at the awards ceremony, the media's reaction was immense. Some people consider it hypocritical, seeing the contradiction between his appearance in a music video contained only in his underwear and he tells the young woman to ignore the celebrity culture. But he did not regret: "When I have something to say, I will say it."

Shock-rocker Marilyn Manson performed "The Beautiful People", as a grand finale, and the video for the song was nominated for "Best Rock Video" and "Best Special Effects", marking one of the most significant performances for the band.

In 1998 VMA, Brandy and Monica performed "The Boy Is Mine" together live for the first time, ending media speculation that both are rivals. During the event's original broadcast, the ad faded in the Nine Inch Nails logo on the black screen while playing a combination of music that started as a piece of solo piano and turned into an electronic/industrial knock (which will later be found to be the songs "La Mer" and "Into the Void, "which shares many melodic components and can be considered variations on the theme) and ends with Trent Reznor shouting" Trying to save myself, but I keep moving away "and the word" ninetynine "in the NIN reversed trademark N-font. It is only displayed once during the original broadcast, edited from all repetitions, and is generally seen as a sign that the long-awaited follow-up for The Downward Spiral will be released early in 1999. Work is continued on the album until the first half in 1999, and Nine Inch Nails featured the double-CD song titled "The Fragile" at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards for almost a year until the "ninetynine" ad. This can be found as Easter Egg or on the "Beneath The Surface" menu on the NIN live DVD and All That Could Have Been .

Geri Halliwell attended the event, one of her first public appearances since she left Spice Girls in May. She presents a Video of the Year award to Madonna for "Ray of Light.

Actress Rose McGowan, who has arrived with her boyfriend, Marilyn Manson, wore a transparent, no-bra, and thong gown, while Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston mocked their rift by wearing a brown brown dress similar to Vera Wang.. In an attempt to defeat each other, the singers tear pieces of their dresses to reveal minidresses then roll out a fake battle that makes the audience unbelieving. "People thought Whitney and I had some kind of beef," Carey explained.

1999 : Lil 'Kim appeared at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards with all open breasts and only a small piece of cloth over the nipple. Kim's outfit became more controversial later when she appeared onstage with Mary J. Blige and Diana Ross to present the Best Hip-Hop Video Award, and Ross grabbed it, cupped her hands under Kim's open breasts and wiggled it while Kim laughed.

During a subsequent acceptance speech by Beastie Boys, members of the Ad-Rock group spoke about examples of rape and sexual violence that took place in the crowd at the recent 1999 Woodstock concert show. She begged other musicians in the room to make changes in the way they treated fans at concerts; promised to talk with promoters and security to ensure "the safety of all the girls and women who come to our event."

TLC won Best Video Group for "No Scrubs", receiving a lively applause from the audience and artist. For the second year in a row, Backstreet Boys took the Audience Selection Award for "I Want It That Way", a song they did during the broadcast.

Commerford and his bodyguard were sentenced to one night in jail. RATM's vocalist Zack de la Rocha reportedly left the award after the Commerford action. Guitarist RATM Tom Morello recalls that Commerford linked his plans to the rest of the band before the show, and that both de la Rocha and Morello suggested he oppose it as soon as Bizkit presented the award.

At the end of Christina Aguilera's performance, Durst walked on stage and played part of her band "Livin 'It Up" with Aguilera. Aguilera denied Durst's statement, saying Durst "has no nookie."

Aguilera and Spears denied rumors of competition when they came to the stage, held hands, and introduced Whitney Houston. A year later, at VMA 2003, it was parodied by pres-presenters Fred Durst and Jack Black, with Durst stating that Black was "the funniest living human being."

The Hives and The Vines both performed on the eve of a sudden garage rock revival throughout the year, with rumors spreading around that it would be a 'band performance battle'. Cyrus looked stunned by Minaj's comment and replied, "We're all in this industry. We all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate the dirt, Nicki, congratu-fuckin-lations."
