Plastic film is a thin continuous polymer material. Thick plastic materials are often called "sheets". This thin plastic membrane is used to separate the area or volume, to hold the goods, to act as a barrier, or as a printable surface.

Plastic films are used in various applications. These include: packaging, plastic bags, labels, building construction, landscaping, electrical fabrication, photographic film, film stock for film, video tape, etc.

Ingredients

Almost all plastics can be formed into thin films. Some of the main ones are:

  • Polyethylene - The most common plastic film is made from one of the polyethylene varieties; Low density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, and linear low-density polyethylene.
  • Polypropylene - Polypropylene can be cast film, biaxial oriented film (BOPP), or as a uniaxial oriented film.
  • Polyester - BoPET is a biaxially oriented polyester film
  • Nylon
  • Polyvinyl chloride - film can with or without Plasticizer
  • Various bioplastics and biodegradable plastics are available.
  • Semiembossed film - Semiemboss film can be used as a delayed rubber liner to retain rubber properties and also to prevent dust and other foreign objects from sticking to rubber during calendar and during storage

Process

Plastic films are typically thermoplastic and formed with melt to form films.

  • Cast - Plastic extrusion can get rid of cooled or extinguished film and then rolled.
  • The extrusion film can be stretched, thin, or oriented in one direction or two. Blown or tubular processes force air into an extruded ring to expand the film. Flat tenter frames stretch the extruded film before annealing.
  • Calendar scrolls can be used to form films of hot polymers
  • Deposition of the solution is another film forming process.
  • Filtering is used to erode the film from a solid core (sometimes used to make PTFE thread seal tape)
  • Co-extrusion involves extrusion of two or more different polymer layers into one film
  • Laminates combine two or more films (or other materials) into a sandwich
  • The extrusion coating is used to form films onto film or other substrates

Further process

Plastic films are usually formed into rolls with slitting roll. Often additional coatings or printing operations are also used. The film can be modified by physical vapor deposition to make a metallized film. Films may be subject to Corona treatment or Plasma processing; the film can have the release agent used as needed.
