Plot

Three hundred years into the future, the government provides everything, including plastic surgery operations. Everyone on their sixteenth birthday receives a "beautiful" operation that turns them into a beautiful community standard. After the operation, the new Pretties cross the river that divides the city and live a new life without any responsibility or obligation. There are two other operations available, one for transforming Pretties into "Middle-Pretties" (adults with jobs), and another to turn Middle-Pretties into "Crumblies".

The former city has decomposed after the bacteria infect the world's petroleum, making it unstable. The old society, heavily dependent on oil, fell apart when cars and oil fields exploded and food could no longer be transported. The people who lived before these calamities were called "Rusties."

Tally Youngblood is nearly sixteen. Like every other Ugly, he waited for the operation with great anticipation. Her best friend, Peris, had surgery and, motivated by her desire to meet her, Tally sneaked across the river to the beautiful New Town. There he meets Shay, the other Ugly. They became friends and Shay taught Tally how to ride the hoverboard. Shay also mentions rebelling against the operation. At first, Tally ignored the idea, but was forced to deal with it when Shay escaped a few days before their sixteenth birthday, leaving a faint direction to his destination, a "runaway settlement" called Smoke, where the city escape went to escape from the operation.

On the day of Tally's operation, he was taken to the Special Circumcision, a division similar to "gremlins" and, "[blamed] when something strange happened." Dr. Cable, a woman who is described as "a pretty cruel man", is the head of the Special Circumstances. He gave Tally an ultimatum to help find Shay and Smoke, or never be beautiful. Tally worked together and Dr. Cable gives him a hoverboard and all the equipment needed to survive in the wild, along with a heart pendant that contains a tracking device. Once activated, it will show the location of Smoke to Special Conditions. Following Shay's instructions, Tally set out to find her friend.

When Tally arrives in Smoke, he finds Shay, his friend, David, and the entire Ugles community running away. She was reluctant to activate the locket and it finally became clear that David fell in love with her. David takes him to meet his parents, Maddy and Az, who are the original runaway from the city. They explain how the operation is nothing more than "biting and tucking in cosmetics." It also causes lesions in the brain to make people calm, or "clear-headed." Horrified, Tally decides to keep Smoke's secret and throw the locket into the fire. However, the heat of the fire causes the tracker to activate, giving the location of Smoke.

The next morning, the Special Situation arrived at the camp and Tally tried to escape. He was unsuccessful and captured and taken to a rabbit cage, where another caught Smokies were kept, tied up. Eye scans were taken from all the Smokies that were captured, identifying from which city they escaped. Tally was then taken to Dr. Cable, who explained how they found Smoke. Dr. Cable thinks Tally deliberately activates the locket. After being ordered to retrieve the locket, Tally runs off the hoverboard. After a long chase and stress, he managed to hide in a cave where they could not trace his signature. There he found David also hiding and together, they began to plan a rescue.

Tally and David return to his home, where they find evidence that the Special Situation takes Maddy and Az. David leads Tally to a secret store of survival equipment where they find everything they need, and load it onto four hoverboards that are hidden there. When Tally and David travel back to town to free their friends, they fall in love. Arriving at the Special State complex, they discover that Shay has "changed" and is now Pretty. After meeting Dr. Cable, David hit him and took his working tablet, which contained all the information necessary to reverse the brain lesions created by Pretty surgery. Tally and David then release all the Smokies held in the complex. As they escape from the compound, Maddy informs David that his father, Az, is dead.

After everyone was safe, Maddy began working on drugs using Dr. tablets. Cable. He then offers it to Shay, who refuses, not wanting to be a "vegetable". Because Tally feels responsible for her betrayal, she decides to become Pretty and takes her medicine as "a willing subject". To convince David to let him back into town, he tells him about his involvement with the Special Circumcase and seeks Smoke to betray them. While David absorbed what Tally received, Maddy suggested Tally to return with Shay before he changed his mind. Once there, Tally announces to Pretty Tengah, "I'm Tally Youngblood, make me beautiful," the last sentence of the novel.

The main motive

Identity

According to critics, Uglies contain themes of identity, especially regarding adolescents. Phillip Gough said the Tally city government, which controls what happens in the operation, "removes responsibility for identity," creates commonality and uniformity. By placing great emphasis on the role of individualism, the novel shows the importance of adolescent self-concept. Since identity is shaped by "displacement", and all citizens are carefully protected, there is no chance for them to develop into independence. "Physical identity is determined by the committee," Gough said in his essay on the Westerfeld novel. Due to lack of choice, all "physical identity markers" are destroyed by their government.

Beauty

Kristi N. Scott and M. Heather Dragoo note that other recurring themes in "image-obsessed society" are beauty, and recurring relationships with individuality. Gough agrees, remarking that "when everyone is equal, beauty loses its meaning". Beauty goes hand in hand with identity: Ugandan people are taught to think of their bodies and faces as "temporary", something to be replaced later with cosmetic surgery. Strong lines are drawn to connect features with personality, and one critic states that the characters develop "ugly" and "beautiful" personalities with each stage of their operation.

Dystopian Society

"Utopia that rests on the brutal suppression of individual freedom" is the description of Amanda Craig of The Times about the town of Tally. Many critics have identified the tendency of the controlling government in this novel. The people in the protagonist world are "programmed and designed by the Pretty committee," without saying-so in their operations, and identity is placed firmly "in the hands of the state". Dragoo and Scott showed how to separate the city, with Pretties, Uglies, Middlies, and Crumblies neatly divided into sections. Many reviewers commented on the way the city manipulates its inhabitants, including those who are considered rebels, who are nothing more than a "benign body". Bedies, dystopian societies described by Westerfeld include a common allusion in the genre: the duality of space, the metropolis representing totalitarian civilization and nature as the field of freedom.

Humanity

Critics also found the humanitarian theme within the Uglies. Phillip Gough notes that Pretties and Specials (those working for Special Conditions) "posthuman" because of their operations. Others, including Scott and Dragoo, oppose this, claiming "the human body provides artistic and political canvas for deliberate manipulation," and that this physical transformation can be a "way out for humanity". Novel Uglies does not seem to have a definite stance, although the points more clearly shown in Pretties and Specials, the following books are in the trilogy.

When asked how he came up with the idea of Uglies, Westerfeld said, "inspiration came from a friend whose dentist asked him to consider cosmetic surgery." He was the son of a computer programmer for Univac, which means he grew familiar with leading technologies of the 1960s. Amanda Craig said that "it was her view of how such discoveries would lead to a loss of absolute privacy that has raised many letter fans like the question of how dominance looks to our lives."

This book shares many themes with the 1964 episode The Twilight Zone "Number 12 Looks Like Like You". The authors of the books noted that he saw the episode in his childhood but forgot the details.

In the dedication page for Uglies, Westerfeld said: "This novel was formed by a series of e-mail exchanges between me and Ted Chiang about his story" Liking What You See: Documentary. "Input on the script is also invaluable." In another interview, Westerfeld said the documentary is about a new technology that allows an individual to shut down their ability to see beauty so they can focus on the deeper and more important parts of other individuals. In a 2012 interview in Bookyurt, Westerfeld explained that his intention in writing the book was not to make great comments on issues with beauty, but to make people aware of the growing culture of retouching in the world and become aware of our own ideas about beauty and our need to think for ourselves.

Reception

This novel has received most of the positive reviews. The Baroque Body praised the novel as "a creative slang, a unique technical gadget, and personality traits." Cory Doctorow praised the "perfect parable of teenage life," and declared that it was "a good science fiction for youth." Jennifer Mattson claims it as "ingenious." Reed Business Information praised the "plot reassuring" and noted that it was "very readable."

However, the Weekly Publishers commented that Tally was "a rather passive protagonist," and the United Kingdom Times complained that "Tally herself is a bit too vague as a character." Critics Jennifer Mattson noted that the novel's quick move as "bad for a convincing relationship."

The novel sparked discussions about the use of plastic surgery to enhance one's appearance. The author says he has "received many letters from girls who have decided not to perform surgery since reading the Uglies," while others, triggered by Uglies, have begun to contemplate the ethics of changing your body appearance. Westerfeld has theorized that "undergoing extreme cosmetic surgery would be like buying a $ 1,000 Gucci bag, an indication that you are a member of a privileged class." Critics criticize his opinion. However, Westerfeld also stated he would "not hesitate [to use plastic surgery] if he had a child with a port-wine stain. We've all changed our appearance since the clothes were found." Other critics say that when changing a person's appearance by plastic surgery can be ethically debated, the benefits to people who need it are extraordinary.

There are also some moderate debates triggered by the Uglies about the issue of people's monitoring. Countries have begun tracking teenagers through their phones and sometimes through dental implants. Westerfeld felt that this would "lead to a complete loss of privacy," yet, others felt that this technology was needed to properly monitor people.
