East Asian blepharoplasty , also known as "double eyelid surgery", is a type of cosmetic surgery in which the skin around the eyes is re-formed (blepharoplasty). The purpose of this procedure is to make the upper eyelid with a fold (ie "double eyelid") of the naturally occuring eyelid without fold (also known as "single eyelid" or "monolid").
Anatomically, there are a number of subtle differences in the eyelids of the upper East Asia, compared to European and Sub-Saharan Black European eyelids. While some East Asians have double eyelids and some do not, there is also a great variation in the fold position (double eyelid size) of eyelids over East Asia. The top lid petals can range from 1 mm (0.039 inches) above the lash line to about 10 mm (0.39 inches). Several methods can be used to create double eyelids - including incisional incisions, full partial incisions and no incision method (eg DST method). Each has advantages depending on the patient's anatomy and desires.
East Asian blepharoplasty has been reported as the most common aesthetic procedure in Taiwan, South Korea and other parts of East Asia and is often conducted in the northeastern states of India such as Assam. This procedure is reported to have some risk of complications, but it is generally quite safe if performed by an expert plastic surgeon. East Asian blepharoplasty practitioners include plastic surgeons (facial and reconstructive plastic surgery), otolaryngologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and ophthalmologists (oculoplastic surgeons). The procedure for removing epicanthal folds (ie epicanthroplasty) is often performed in conjunction with East Asian blepharoplasty.
The procedure to change the eyelid appearance of East Asian natures has become controversial. For example, procedural opponents, such as author David Mura, describe it as "indoctrinated by white beauty standards", even though the New York-based beauty surgeon. Edward Kwak states that many patients who get the procedure done are "not trying to look white", but look like many East Asians who naturally have eyelid folds. There is also a belief that double eyelids provide a more energetic appearance, and the procedure is popular among high school graduates in China with the view that it will improve their job prospects.
