Nine Inch Nails , commonly abbreviated as NIN (styled as NI? ), is an American industrial rock band founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio. The band released two influential albums during the 1990s - The Downward Spiral (1994) and The Fragile (1999) - and has a record sales exceeding 20 million copies worldwide, with 10 million certified sales in the United States alone.
Despite its success, the band had several hostilities with the corporate side of the recording industry. The first was a famous conflict with TVT Records regarding the band's first album, Pretty Hate Machine, which caused Reznor to record his follow-up album in secret to avoid the influence of labels. Nine Inch Nails signed a contract with Interscope Records afterwards, but after releasing the band's fifth studio album Year Zero in 2007, Reznor announced that Nine Inch Nails will release future material independently. The band signed a contract with Columbia Records to release their eighth album Hesitation Marks (2013). Two EPs: Not Actual Events (2016) and Add Violence (2017) released independently under The Null Corporation.
As the founder and lead producer of the band, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor has been regarded as the only member and creative force that is constantly in the group through much of its history. However, this changed in 2016 when British musician Atticus Ross was introduced as a permanent member of Nine Inch Nails, along with the announcement of Not an Actual Event EP. Furthermore, Reznor usually assembles live bands to perform with him on stage. The band's tour consists of a rotating ranks, and often rearranges songs to fit the immediate settings. Nine Inch Nails often use thematic visual elements to accompany on stage shows as well, which often include complex light shows.
Nine Inch Nails has been nominated for thirteen Grammy Awards, winning twice for the songs "Wish" and "Happiness in Slavery" in 1992 and 1996, respectively. In 1997, Reznor appeared on the list of the most influential magazines of the year, and Spin magazine has described it as "the most important artist in music". In 2004, Rolling Stone put Nine Inch Nails ranked 94th on the list of the 100 greatest artists of all time magazine. Nine Inch Nails was nominated for entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, the first year of eligibility. The band was nominated again the following year, but was not sworn in.

History
Formation(1988-1989)
In 1987, Trent Reznor played keyboards in the Cleveland, Ohio band called Exotic Birds, then managed by John Malm Jr. Reznor and Malm became friends, and when Reznor left Exotic Birds to work on his own music, Malm unofficially became his. manager. At the time, Reznor was employed as an assistant engineer and janitor at Right Track Studios, in Cleveland; he asked the owner of Bart Koster's studio to ask permission to record some of his own material demos for free during the time the studio was not being used. Koster agrees and allows Reznor to use it whenever it is empty, remarking that it needs it "just a little wear out on the head of his ribbon". While completing the initial recording, Reznor could not find a band that could articulate the material as he wished. Instead, inspired by the Prince, Reznor plays all instruments, except drums, himself. This role still belonged to Reznor in most of the band's studio recordings, although he occasionally involved musicians and other assistants. Nine Inch Nails' debut was at the Phantasy Theater in Lakewood, Ohio on October 21, 1988 as part of the Hate Beautiful Machine Tour Series. In 1988, after playing his first show in favor of Skinny Puppy, Reznor's ambition for Nine Inch Nails was to release a 12-inch piece on a small European label. Some labels responded positively to the demo material and Reznor signed a contract with TVT Records. The nine choices of the Right Track demo were recorded live in November 1988, collectively known as the Pureest Being , then released in revision to the band's first full-length studio release, Pretty Hate Machine (1989). The overall sound on Purest Feeling is lighter than Pretty Hate Machine ; some songs contain more drums and live guitar, as well as more sample usage of the movie.
Reznor created the name "Nine Inch Nails" for "abbreviated easily", not for "literal meaning". Another reported explanation has been circulated, alleging that Reznor chose to refer to the crucifixion of Jesus with nine-inch nails, or nine-inch nails Freddy Krueger. The English letters NIN are also known for their resemblance to the modern Hebrew character of the Tetragrammaton. The Nine Inch Nails logo, made up of letters [NI?] Placed inside the border, designed by Reznor and Gary Talpas, and first appeared in the music video for Nine Inch Nails debut single "Down in It", and was inspired by typography Tibor Kalman in the album Talking Heads Remain in Light . Talpas, a native of Cleveland, will continue to design painting of Nine Inch Nails packaging until 1997.
Beautiful Hate Machine (1989-1991 )
Written, arranged and performed by Reznor, Nine Inch Nails's first album Pretty Hate Machine debuted in 1989. It marked his first collaboration with Adrian Sherwood (who produced the main single "Down in It" in London without meet Reznor face to face) and Mark "Flood" Ellis. Reznor asks Sean Beavan to incorporate the Pretty Hate Machine demo, which has received many offers for recording transactions. He mixed the sound during Nine Inch Nails live concert for several years, eventually becoming an unofficial member of the live band and singing live vocal backups from his place in the mixing console. Flood production will appear on every major release of Nine Inch Nails until 1994, and Sherwood has made remixes for the band recently in 2000. Reznor and his co-producers expanded the Right Track Studio demo by adding a single "Head Like a Hole" and "Sin". Rolling Stone Michael Azerrad describes the album as "the sound of industrial-strength over the pop frame" and "the terrible but catchy music"; Reznor proclaimed this combination "a sincere remark" about "what was in his head at the time". In fact, the song "Down in It" spends more than two months on the Billboard club-play dance chart. After spending 113 weeks on Billboard 200, Hate Cantik Machine became one of the first independent recordings to be released for platinum certification.
Three music videos made in album promotion. MTV shows videos for "Down in It" and "Head Like a Hole", but the explicit video for "Sin" is only released in partial form for Closure . The original version of the video "Down This" ended with the implication that the character of Reznor had fallen from the building and died on the street. This record attracted the FBI's attention. As Reznor explained in an interview with The Convulsions Magazine :
There was a scene when I was lying on the ground, looking dead, in Lodge-esque poses and we had a camera with a big weather balloon containing helium connected to it... the first one we did, we started the movie, I lying on the ground and the rope holding the balloon jolted, the camera just took off into the atmosphere... the camera landed two hundred miles away in a farmer's farm somewhere. He found it and took it to the police, thinking that it was a surveillance camera for marijuana, they developed the movie and thought it was some kind of dirty film of murder, gave it to the FBI and had a pathologist who saw the body say, 'yes, he rotted,' ( I have cornmeal on me, right?) 'She's rotten for 3 weeks.' You can see the other band members leave and they have these weird clothes, and they think it's some kind of gang that kills.
In 1989, while promoting for the album, band members were asked what event they wanted to show. They jokingly replied (probably during a hangover) that they wanted to appear in Dance Party USA, because that was the most unreasonable choice they could think of at the time. Much to their surprise, they were booked on the show, and showed up.
In 1990, Nine Inch Nails embarked on the Tour Tour of the Beautiful Hate Machine, where she toured North America as an opening for alternative rock artists such as Peter Murphy and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Reznor began to destroy his equipment while on stage; Kidnappers Mike Gitter attributes the early success of live bands in front of a rock-oriented audience with this aggressive attitude. Nine Inch Nails then embarked on a world tour that continued through the first Lollapalooza festival in 1991.
Dispute the record label and Broke (1992 ) -1993)
After the opening of a poor European reception for Guns N 'Roses, the band returned to America amid pressure from TVT to produce a follow up to Pretty Hate Machine. Upon learning that they are inhibiting the control of his project, Reznor criticized the labeling of Nine Inch Nails as a commercial-oriented band and asked for his label to terminate his contract, but they ignored his plea. In response, Reznor quietly began recording under various guises to avoid interference from record companies. Involved in hostilities with TVT, he signed a recording contract with Interscope Records and created Nothing Records:
We made it very clear that we did not do other footage for TVT. But they made it pretty clear they were not ready for sale. So I feel like, well, I finally made it, but it's dead. Flood and I have to record Broken under different band name, because if TVT know we record, they can seize all our shit and release it. Jimmy Iovine got involved with Interscope, and we got some sort of slave trade. It's not my deed. I do not know anything about Interscope. And I was really mad at him at first because it was from one bad situation to another potentially different situation. But Interscope goes into it as if they really want to know what I want. That's great, after I put my crazy raving action.
In 1992, Nine Inch Nails moved to 10050 Cielo Drive, Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles (renamed "Le Pig" by Reznor), where Tate's murder, when Charles Manson's "family" killed Sharon Tate, wife of the director of the famous Roman film Polanski, and four friends. It was used for bands to record Broken , an extended game (EP) which was the first Nine Inch Nails release distributed by Interscope Records and reached the top 10 on Billboard 200. liner, Reznor praised the 1991 band Nining Inch Nails touring as an influence on EP sounds. He characterized Broken as a guitar-based "blowout", and as "much more difficult... than Pretty Hate Machine". The inspiration for a louder voice came from the way the live band played during a concert like Lollapalooza. Songs from Broken resulted in Nine Inch Nails two Grammy Awards: an appearance of the first single EP "Happiness in Slavery" from Woodstock '94, and the second single "Wish". In reference to receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for "Wish", Reznor joked that "Wish" became "the only one who ever won a Grammy who said 'fist' in the lyrics." Against a new material tour, Reznor began living and full-time recording at Le Pig, working on a follow-up free of restrictions from his record label.
Peter Christopherson of the band Coil and Throbbing Gristle directed the show video for "Wish", but the most controversial EP video accompanied "Happiness in Slavery". The video was almost universally banned because of its graphic depictions of Bob Flanagan's performing artist who was crossed out and lying on an engrossing machine, torturing and then killing him. The third video for "Pinion", partially inserted into the MTV opening sequence Alternative Nation , shows the toilets that seem to flow into someone's mouth in bondage. Reznor and Christopherson compiled three clips along with recordings for "Help Me I Am in Hell" and "Gave Up" into a long-term music video entitled Broken . This describes the killing of a young man who was kidnapped and tortured when forced to watch a video. These recordings were never officially released, but instead appeared secretly among record merchants. A separate performance video for "Gave Up" featuring Richard Patrick and Marilyn Manson was filmed on Le Pig. Live recording "Wish" is also filmed, and both videos appear in Closure .
Damaged followed by EP Fixed remix at the end of 1992. The only remaining song from the final version of the release was a "Last" remix, produced by Butch Vig (outro of remix "Last" is heard on "Throw This Away", which also includes remix Vig "Suck"). An unedited version appeared on the internet as an 8-bit mono 11 kHz file, "NIN_LAST.AIFF", available by FTP from cyberden.com in 1993; has been removed from the website, but can still be found on the P2P network (Reznor then makes it available in higher quality (256kbit/s mp3) on remix.nin.com). Vig then talks about his remix when answering a question at a music production forum, saying "I started recording a lot of new parts, and took it in a whole different direction. When it was over, Trent thought the front of the mix did not" "This is suitable for EP, so he only I'm glad it's on the site Duke and Steve work with me on remixes, in the early days of Trash. "
The Downward Spiral (1993-1997 )
The initial idea for The Downward Spiral was conceived after the concert of the Lollapalooza 1991 festival ended in September of that year. Reznor developed the concept of the album theme and then used it as a lyric. He searched and moved to 10050 Cielo Drive, renting it for $ 11,000 a month from July 4, 1992, marking the beginning of both Broken and The Downward Spiral . This goes against the original choice for recording an album in New Orleans.
Nine Inch Nails's second studio album, The Downward Spiral , entered Billboard 200 at number two, and remains the best-selling Nine Inch Nails release in the United States for shipments of over four million copies, in addition to selling five million copies worldwide. Influenced by the late 1970s by Pink Floyd and David Bowie, The Downward Spiral includes a wide variety of textures and moods to illustrate the mental progress of the central character. Flood generated several songs on the album, while Alan Moulder mixed most of the album and then took on a wider production task for the upcoming album release. Reznor invites Sean Beavan to work on The Downward Spiral. After contributing to the remix of Nine Inch Nails songs, such as "Closer", Beavan mixed and produced with Marilyn Manson Antichrist Superstar in 1996. As well as Broken , The Downward Spiral was recorded at Le Pig Studios. "March of the Pigs" and "Closer" were released as singles. Two other songs from the album, "Hurt" and "Piggy", were released for radio without releasing a commercial single.
The music video for "Closer" directed by Mark Romanek and often gets rotation on MTV, though the network is very censoring of the original version, which they consider too graphical. This video features events in laboratories relating to religion, sexuality, animal cruelty, politics, and terror; Controversial imagery includes bare balding women with masked crosses, monkeys tied to crosses, swine pig heads on several types of machines, vulva diagrams, Reznor wearing S & amp; M while swinging in his fetters, and he was wearing a ball of vomit. The radio edits that partially mute the explicit lyrics of the song also receive a lot of broadcast time.
The critical response to The Downward Spiral was generally favorable, and the retrospective review regarded it as one of the most important albums of the 1990s. It was included in some of the best publication album list: in 2005 the album was ranked 25th on the Spin list of "100 Biggest Albums, 1985-2005", and in 2003 Rolling Stone > rated the 200 album number in their "Biggest 500 Album of All Time" list. Blender named it America's 80th Biggest Album . It's ranked No. 488 in Martin Popoff's The Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums All Time book. In 2001 Q was named The Downward Spiral as one of 50 Most Heavy Albums of All Time ; in 2010 the album was ranked No. 102 on 250 Best Album list of Q's Lifetime (1986-2011) . After the release of The Downward Spiral, Reznor produced an accompanying remix album titled Further Down the Spiral , the only Nine Inch Nails non-major release certified gold in United. Country and among the best selling remix album of all time. It contains contributions from Coil with Danny Hyde, Aphex Twin electronic musician, producer Rick Rubin, and Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, among others.
After the 1994 release The Downward Spiral , the live band embarked on the Self Destruct Tour to support the album. The stage set-up contains a dirty curtain that will be pulled down and up for visuals displayed during a song like "Hurt". The tour debuted with a shabby and messy picture where members would come out in ragged clothing smoothed with cornmeal. Concerts are cruel and chaotic, with band members often hurting themselves, and they will often destroy their instruments at the end of concerts, attacking each other, and stage-dive into the crowd. The tour reached the widest mainstream audience with wet mud performance at Woodstock '94 which aired on Pay-Per-View and was seen in as many as 24A million homes. Nine Inch Nails received substantial mainstream successes afterwards, performing significantly higher production values ââand adding theatrical visual elements to live performances. Action supporters for the tour include The Jim Rose Circus and Marilyn Manson. Released in 1997, Closure documented video highlights of the tour, including live videos full of "Eraser", "Wounded" and one-take "March of the Pigs" clip directed by Peter Christoperson. Around this time, Reznor's studio perfectionism, struggling with addiction, and a prolonged writer block writings of The Fragile . The splits of the Fragile and the first hiatus (1999) -2003)
Five years passed between The Downward Spiral and Nine Inch Nails' next studio album, The Fragile , which arrived as a double album in September 1999. The Fragile > i> conceived by making "songwriting and organizing and production and sound design... the same thing. A song will start with a drum or visual circle and eventually a song will pop out of it and it is a song." Canadian rock producer Bob Ezrin was consulted on the album track list; liner notes that he "delivers continuity and last flow."
On the heels of the band's previous success, media anticipation surrounded The Fragile more than a year before its release, when it was described as "often delayed". The album debuted at number one on Billboard 200, selling 228,000 copies in its first week and receiving generally positive reviews. Spin praised The Fragile as "this year's album", while Pitchfork Media highlighted the melodramatic lyrics. Nine Inch Nails released three commercial singles from albums in various regions: "The Day the World Went Away" in North America; "We're in This Together" in the EU and Japan (on three separate discs); and "Into the Void" in Australia. Several songs from the album became regular on alternative rock radio stations, but the album dropped to number 16 and came out of the Top 10 Billboard just a week after it was released, so the band set a record for the biggest drop from number one, it's broken. Reznor funded the next North American tour from his own pocket.
Before the album's release, the song "Starfuckers, Inc." provoking media speculation about who Reznor intends to lyric acerbic to satirize. Patricia MacCormack's criticism of sexuality Patricia MacCormack interpreted the song as "a fierce attack on alternative music scenes," especially former Reznor friends and protà © à © gÃÆ' © Marilyn Manson. Both artists put aside their differences when Manson appeared on the song's music video, entitled "Starsuckers, Inc." and performed on stage with Nine Inch Nails at Madison Square Garden in 2000.
Reznor followed The Fragile with another remix album,
During the Tour of Fragility 2.0 Reznor suffered a heroin overdose in London in June 2000, forcing a show to be played that night to be canceled. The incident prompted Reznor to enter the rehab, putting Nine Inch Nails under arrest while he was trying to become conscious.
In 2002, Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nails "" Hurt "for his album, American IV: The Man Comes Around, for a critical acclaim. After seeing the music video, which later won the Grammy, Reznor himself became fans of rendition:
I pop that video, and wow... Tears welled, silent, creeps... Wow. [I feel like] I just lost my girlfriend, because the song is not mine anymore... It really makes me think about how strong the music is as medium and art form. I wrote a few words and music in my bedroom as a way to stay sane, about the gloomy and desperate places I experienced, completely isolated and alone. [Somehow] are finally reinterpreted by music legends of a very different era/genre and still retain sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit is pure.
Dengan Gigi (2004-2006)
Six more years passed before the full album of Nine Inch Nails' fourth. With Teeth was released in May 2005, even though it was leaked before its official release date. The album was written and recorded throughout 2004 after Reznor's battle with alcoholism and substance abuse and legal issues with his former manager, John Malm Jr. With Teeth debuted on Billboard 200, the second government of Nine Inch Nails at number one with an album. Album package does not have a typical liner record; it just lists the names of songs and producer colleagues, and the URLs for online PDF posters with lyrics and full credit. The entire album is made available in streaming audio on the band's official MySpace page before its release date.
The critical reception of the album is mostly positive: Rob Meffield's Rolling Stone describes the album as "Vintage Nine Inch Nails". PopMatters cursed the album, claiming Reznor "run out of ideas."
A music video for the song "The Hand That Feeds" aired on the official website of Nine Inch Nails in March 2005. Reznor released the source file for him in GarageBand format a month later, allowing fans to remix the song. He also released files for the album's second single "Only" in a wider variety of formats, including Pro Tools and ACID Pro. David Fincher directs the video for "Only" with computer-generated imagery. The music video planned for her third single, "Every Day Is Exactly the Same", directed by Francis Lawrence but reportedly discarded in the post-production stage. All three singles topped the Billboard Alternative Songs charts.
Nine Inch Nails launched a North American arena tour in Autumn 2005, powered by Queens of the Stone Age, Autolux, and Death from Above 1979. Another opening act on the tour, hip-hop artist Saul Williams, performing on stage with Nine Inch Nails in Voodoo Music Experience Festival during a headlining show in hurricane-stricken New Orleans, former Reznor home. The Nine Inch Nails live band completed a North American amphitheater tour in the summer of 2006, joining Bauhaus, TV on Radio, and Peaches. The Beside You in Time documentary tour was released in February 2007 through three formats: DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The home video release debuted at number one on both the Billboard Top Music Video and Billboard Comprehensive Music Video charts in the United States.
Year Zero (2006-2007)
Nine Inch Nails' studio album, Year Zero , was released just two years after With Teeth , a marked change in the slow pace of previous album releases. With lyrics written from the perspective of some fictitious characters, Zero Year is a concept album that criticizes the policies of the United States government and its impact on the world of 15 years in the future. The critical response to the album is generally favorable, with an average score of 76% on Metacritic.
This story takes place in the United States in 2022, which has been called "Year 0", by government, to be a born-again American year. It has suffered several major terrorist attacks, apparently by Islamic fundamentalists, including attacks on Los Angeles and Seattle, and in response, the government takes over the absolute control of the country. The government is a Christian fundamentalist theocracy, which maintains the control of society through institutions such as the Bureau of Morality and Plano's First Evangelical Church. The Cedocore government company distributes Parepin drugs through water supplies, making Americans drinking water apathetic and cheerful. There are several underground rebel groups, especially those operating online, most notably Art is Resistance and a Reverse Initiative Solution. In response to the increasing suppression of the government, some corporate, government, and subversive websites are being redeployed to the present by a group of scientists who work secretly against the authorities. The website-of-the-future was sent to 2007 to alert Americans about the future of dystopian to come and to prevent it forming in the first place.
An alternative reality game appears parallel to the concept of Year Zero , extending the storyline. Hints hidden on a tour tour initially made fans discover a network of fictitious websites, in a game depicting "Orwell's picture of the United States around 2022". Prior to the release of Year Zero , unreleased songs from the album were found on USB drives hidden at the Nine Inch Nails concert venue in Lisbon and Barcelona, âââ ⬠<â â¬
The album's first single, "Survivalism", and another song from Year Zero was released as a multitrack audio file for fans to remix. The remix album titled Zero Year Remix was later released, containing remixes of Year Zero by other artists. The remix album is the final release of Nine Inch Nails on major record labels for over five years, as it has completed its contractual obligations to Interscope Records and does not renew its contract. The remix album is accompanied by an interactive remix site with multitrack downloads and remix posting capabilities.
Reznor planned a film adaptation of the album and recorded Year Zero as "part of a bigger picture of some of the things I'm working on. Basically, I wrote a soundtrack for a movie that did not exist." The project moved to television because of high fees for Zero Years as a film, then Reznor found American film producer Lawrence Bender and met the author. On August 10, 2007, Reznor announced that they would bring this concept to the television network in an effort to get the deal: "We will launch it to the network, so we are in a few weeks to meet all of the main people, and we'll see what happened. "Since first announcing his plans for a television series, his progress has slowed, reportedly due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild strike, but continues. In 2010 the resulting miniseries, also called Year Zero , are under development with HBO and BBC Worldwide Productions, with scenarios and scripts written by Reznor and CarnivÃÆ' le author Daniel Knauf.
Ghost I-IV and The Slip (2008)
In February 2008, Reznor posted a news update on the Nine Inch Nails website entitled "2 weeks." On March 2, Ghost I-IV (first release on the Null Company label), 36-song instrumental album, became available through the band's official website. Ghost I-IV is made available in a number of different formats and forms, from the first free volume downloads, to the $ 300 Ultra-Deluxe limited edition package. All 2,500 copies of the $ 300 package are sold out in three days. This album is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license. The album was made improvisation over a 10-week period and contributors included Atticus Ross, Alan Moulder, Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew, and Brian Viglione.
Similar to the announcement that eventually led to the release of Ghost I-IV , a post on the band's website in April 2008 read "2 weeks!" On May 5th, Nine Inch Nails released The Slip through its website without ads or promotions. This album is available for free download with messages from Reznor, "this one is for me," protected by the same Creative Commons license as Ghost , and has seen individual downloads exceeding 1.4 million. The Slip has been released on the CD as a 250,000 limited edition.
Since the release of Ghost I-IV and Slip , a 25-date tour titled Lights in the Sky was announced in several North American cities, and later expanded to include more North American dates as well as dates in South America. Cortini and Josh Freese returned as members of the previous tour, while Robin Finck rejoined the band and Justin Meldal-Johnsen added to the bass guitar. Freese and Cortini left the live band, but became a quartet with the addition of Ilan Rubin on drums.
On January 7, 2009, Reznor uploaded unedited HD quality footage from three shows as more than 400 GB downloads via BitTorrent. In a live response, the fan organization known as The One It's On We quickly downloaded the data and began compiling video recordings with their own recordings to create a professional 3-part digital movie, followed by a physical release made "by fans for fans". This tour documentation is collectively known as the Other Truth Version and was released throughout late December 2009 to February 2010 through three formats: DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and BitTorrent. To date, groups and projects have received significant attention from media outlets such as USA Today , Rolling Stone , Techdirt and Pitchfork TV, and hold support from Reznor and the fan community with theater play held around the world. Art director Nine Inch Nails and webmaster Rob Sheridan recorded on the band's official website:
This is another example of a loyal fanbase and a policy of openness that combines to fill the void left by the old media obstacles. The whole NIN camp is really happy that treating our fans with respect and nurturing their creativity has brought so much great content, and that we now have a high quality souvenir of our most ambitious tour.
Nine Inch Nails Revenge , an exclusive iPhone/iPod rhythm game developed by Tapulous, was released on March 8, 2009 (five months after the company announced game development). This installment is in the Tap Tap video game franchise themed after Nine Inch Nails, and includes songs from Ghost I-IV and Slip . Part of the Ghost I-IV album was also used in the making of the soundtrack for the Citizenfour documentary.
Wave Goodbye touring and second hiatus (2009-2012)
In February 2009, Reznor posted his thoughts on the future of Nine Inch Nails on his official website, stating that "I have been thinking for some time now it's time to make NINs disappear for the time being." Reznor has since clarified that he "did not finish making music under the moniker, but Nine Inch Nails was done for the foreseeable future." The "Wave Goodbye" tour ended on September 10, 2009, at Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. Reznor later released two songs under the moniker Nine Inch Nails: the theme song for the movie Tetsuo: The Bullet Man , and the cover of "Zoo" U2, included in Achtung Baby tribute album AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered .
In 2009 Reznor married Mariqueen Maandig, and formed a project with Maandig and Atticus Ross dubbed How to Ruin the Angels. His first release, six self-titled EP songs, is available for free download in June 2010. Reznor's next collaboration with Ross is co-writing and produces an official score for the 2010 David Fincher movie The Social Network . Reznor and Ross received two awards for the Score, the 2010 World Gold Awards for Best Original Score for Motion Pictures, and Oscars 2010 for the Best Original Score. Reznor and Ross again collaborated with Fincher for the official American adaptation score of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo novel, released in December 2011, and then again on Fincher's 2014 Gone Girl movie. > me
In July 2012 Reznor teamed up with game developer Treyarch to create the theme music for Call of Duty: Black Ops II . Later that year Reznor returned to work with Atticus Ross along with Alessandro Cortini on a remix of the song "Destroyer" by Telepathe. Reznor also appeared in a documentary called "Sound City" directed by Dave Grohl, in addition to writing together and performing "Mantra" songs with Grohl and Josh Homme. This led to further collaborations with Reznor and Homme on the 2013 album of Queens of the Stone Age entitled... Like Clockwork. Reznor contributed vocals and drums that reprogrammed the song "Kalopsia" and vocals on "Fairweather Friends" along with Elton John on piano and vocals. In October a project with Dr. Dre and Beats Electronics announced that Reznor wrote "probably not what you expect [from me]". The project was named "Daisy"; digital music service was announced in January 2013. Until January 2014 the service was fully launched, with Reznor serving as chief creative officer.
Return to tour and Hesitant Signs (2012-2015)
In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Reznor indicated that he would write for the majority of 2012 with Nine Inch Nails "in mind". Reznor finally confirmed that he was working on new Nine Inch Nails material and would probably perform live again. In February 2013, Reznor announced the return of Nine Inch Nails and revealed the Twenty Thirteen Tour. He also revealed that the band's new lineup will include Eric Avery from Jane's Addiction, Adrian Belew of King Crimson, and Josh Eustis from Tel Aviv's Telephone, as well as members returning Alessandro Cortini and Ilan Rubin. However, both Avery and Belew will be out of the touring band before the show begins, with former members Robin Finck replacing them again.
On May 28, Nine Inch Nails's newly finished album. Released September 3rd, Stimulus Sign combines a rhythm that reminds of previous releases, but is broader and theatrical. In addition to the recently departed Adrian Belew, Reznor employs bass player Pino Palladino along with Todd Rundgren and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham to achieve various rock-art elements.
The album produced three singles, all released before that of the album itself. "Came Back Haunted" was released on June 6, with the accompanying music video carrying an epileptic seizure warning. The second single, "Copy of A", was released on August 12 free to US and UK Amazon.com account holders. "Everything" is the third and last single, recorded during the session for the greatest Nine Inch Nails album. Sessions give way to more songs that eventually result in an entire album.

In December 2015, Reznor reported that "Nine Inch Nails will be back in 2016".
No Events the actual , Add Violence , and Bad Witch (2016-present)
In October 2016, in response to fan questions about the lack of new Nine Inch Nails music, Reznor responded with "2016 not over yet". In December 2016, Reznor commented on his remarks about the return of Nine Inch Nails at the end of the year: "The words came out of my mouth, did not they? [...] Just wait and see what happens." Three days later, Reznor announced an EP titled Not an Actual Event , along with Broken Reissues , The Downward Spiral , and The Fragile with subsequent reissues With Teeth , Year Zero , and Slips released later in 2017. Also announced is Fragile: Deviations 1 , which consists of 37 instrumental, alternative and unreleased songs, many of which have never been heard anywhere. Not an Actual Event was released on December 23, 2016, with fans who previously ordered received their download link one day in advance. Atticus Ross was also declared a full-time official member of the band, the first member other than Reznor to be added to the band.
In early 2017, the band announced three major festival dates in North America. In January 2017, the band announced that they will be performing at the Panorama Music Festival in New York on July 30th. Music characteristics and lyrics
There are several musical genres Nine Inch Nails has been described as, including alternative rock, industrial rock, dance industry, industry, electro-industry, metal industry, and electronic rock. AllMusic's Steve Huey states that "Nine Inch Nails is the most popular industry group ever and is largely responsible for bringing music to a mass audience". Reznor never referred to his own work as an industrial music, but admitted borrowing techniques from early industry groups such as Throbbing Gristle and Test Dept. Although the differences between these artists initially operate under the terms "industry" and Nine Inch Nails, it has become common in the journalistic descriptions of Reznor's body of work to describe it as such. Reznor acknowledged in Spin magazine that "Down in It" was influenced by the early Skinny Puppy, in particular the band song "Dig It"; other songs from Pretty Hate Machine and With Teeth have been described as synth-pop. Reviewing The Fragile , critic Steve Cooper noted that this album juxtaposed various genres, such as solo piano on "The Frail" and drum and bass elements in "Starfuckers, Inc." Ambient music has been featured in some Nine Inch Nails music, including on Ghost I-IV (which is specifically a dark atmosphere), Hesitation Mark , The Downward Spiral , Slip , and The Fragile .
Certain techniques and styles can be found in the Nine Inch Nails catalog. Songs like "Wish", and "The Day of the World Went Away" show the storied dynamics. The Reznor singing follows the same pattern, often moving from whisper to scream. He has also used the software to change his voice in several songs, as seen in "Starfuckers, Inc." and "Burn". The band's music also sometimes contains complex time signatures, especially in "The Collector", from With Teeth , and the "March of the Pigs" favorite concert. Reznor regularly uses noise and distortion in his song settings, and combines dissonance with chromatic and/or harmony melodies. These techniques are all used in the song "Hurt", which contains a very dissonant tritone played on the guitar during the verses, B5 # 11, emphasizing when Reznor sang the eleventh note on the word "I" every time B/E # dyad was played. "Closer" ends with a colored piano motif: this melody debuts during the second paragraph "Piggy" in the organ, then reappears in the power chord at D drop tuning across the chorus of "Heresy", while the upside (up) version is used in all "A Warm Place", and then repeats in its original state for the last time on "The Downward Spiral". At The Fragile , Reznor reviewed the technique of repeating the motif several times throughout different songs, either on different instruments, with altered harmonies, or in changing tempos. Many of the songs in Year Zero contained an expanded instrumental end, covering the entire second half of "The Great Destroyer" three minutes long. Allmusic's reviews describe the sound of a mixed-album laptop: "guitar sounds against distractions, beeps, pops and spots of dull sonic attacks, big, distorted, organic, looped, screwed, deflected, and damaged percussion."
The lyrical themes found in the Nine Inch Nails song mostly relate to the dark exploration of self from religion, greed, fame, lust, addiction, self-deception, aging, remorse, nihilism, and sometimes politics, to the last frequently researched topic in Year Zero . Recording Three Nine Inch Nails is a draft album: The Downward Spiral , the The Fragile , and Zero Years mentioned earlier. With Teeth is a concept album about endless dreams that happened in reality, but Reznor finally took this idea out of the record.
Influences
Initial effects of Nine Inch Nails include Ministry and Skinny Puppy, which helped shape what became the 1989's Pretty Hate Machine . The album's liner notes also pay homage to hip-hop group Public Enemy and Prince. Another big influence on the sound band is Gary Numan, which was proven when Reznor once said that "after hearing 'Cars' I know I want to make music with synthesizers." Single 2005 "Only" exemplifies disco styles and synthesizers drawn from Numan's persuasion. Other important artists for Nine Inch Nails include the late 70s and 80s such as Queen, Devo, Joy Division, Adam Ant, and Soft Cell.
Reznor has toured with some of his influences, including the opening of a short tour for Skinny Puppy in 1988. In 1995, Nine Inch Nails went on a tour with David Bowie, who, along with Pink Floyd, has made a significant impact on The Spiral Below .
Legacy
Nine Inch Nails has influenced many new artists, which according to Reznor ranged from "generic imitations" derived from his early success to the younger bands echoing his style with "a more correct and less imitative way." After the release of The Downward Spiral, mainstream artists began to notice the influence of Nine Inch Nails: David Bowie compared Reznor's influence with The Velvet Underground. Bob Ezrin, producer for Pink Floyd, Kiss, Alice Cooper, and Peter Gabriel, described Reznor in 2007 as a "true visionary" and advised artists aspiring to pay attention to uncompromising attitudes. Nine Inch Nails has been credited by music journalists to popularize industrial music, despite the ambivalence of Reznor.
The action has received four awards from 25 nominations, including two Grammy Awards for the songs "Wish" and "Happiness in Slavery" in 1993 and 1996 respectively. Nine Inch Nails has received two Awards Kerrang! ; one of which is the Kerrang icon! in 2006, honoring the band's overall contribution since 1988 and the long-standing influence on rock music. The band has also received nine nominations from the MTV Video Music Awards for some of its videos, including two nominations for the "Closer" music video and five nominations for the "Perfect Drug" music video, including Video of the Year.
In 1997, Reznor appeared on the list of the most influential magazines of the year, and Spin described it as "the most important artist in music". The American Recording Industry Association certifies to 10.5 million band album units in the United States, which accounts for about half of the reported sales of bands worldwide at that time. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine placed The Downward Spiral in No. 1. 200 in the 2003 Greatest of All Time 500 album list, and in the following year put Nine Inch Nails in No. 1. 94 in their The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list.
Live show
Until Atticus Ross joins in 2016, Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails. However, Reznor usually forms a support group of musicians to perform songs in direct settings. The live band, also known as Nine Inch Nails, rearranged the band's studio catalog and created a different sound from Reznor studio recordings. Band members are sometimes invited to participate in the recording process, but the creative control in the studio is always exclusive with Reznor.
The bandworm project was created in 1995 as a side project of Nine Inch Nails between Reznor and various live-band members as a more "democratic" creative environment. The band initially included live band members Danny Lohner and Charlie Clouser, but eventually expanded to include other Nine Inch Nails contributors Josh Freese, Atticus Ross, and Alan Moulder. However, after 9 years of studio sessions, no material was ever officially released from the group, and it certainly was no longer active in 2005.
The live band lineup has a tendency to change drastically between major tours: apart from Reznor remaining on main vocals, keyboards and guitars, no live band members remain constant from the start. Reznor cites the long period of pregnancy between studio albums as part of the reason for this frequent personnel change, as well as his desire for a fresh interpretation of his music.
Enterprise dispute
Reznor is a fussy critic in the music industry, especially the impact that the music business has on creative freedom. Nine Inch Nails has clashed with several music industry companies, culminating in Reznor's decision to continue as an independent artist who does not use the music industry's financial support to fund his creative output.
TVT recording
In the early 1990s, Nine Inch Nails was involved in a much publicized feud with TVT Records, the first record label to sign the band. Reznor objected to the disruption the labels tried with their intellectual property. In the end, Nine Inch Nails entered into a joint venture with Interscope Records where Reznor lost some of his publishing rights to TVT Music in exchange for the freedom of having a trace of Nothing Nothing on his own. In 2005, Reznor sued former friend and manager, John Malm, co-founder of Nothing, for fraud, breach of contract and fiduciary duty, and other claims. Their relationship was officially terminated in the New York courtroom, with damage given to Reznor over $ 3 million.
On the order of the insolvency proceedings of Prudential Securities, TVT placed the rights to Reznor recordings for labels at auction in 2005. This offer included all of the TVT catalogs, including Hate Cantik Machine , and the percentage of royalties from Reznor Publishing Company, Leaving Hope Music/TVT Music. Rykodisc, which did not win the auction but may license the rights of Prudential, reissue the Pretty Hate Machine CD on November 22, 2005. Ryko also republished the "Head Like a Hole" CD and vinyl edition > Pretty Hate Machine in 2006. Label is considered to release a deluxe edition, just as Interscope has done for The Downward Spiral . They were influenced by Reznor and liked the idea, but did not want to pay for the album and the idea was canceled.
Universal Music Group
In May 2007, Reznor made a post on the official website of Nine Inch Nails who was skeptical of Universal Music Group (the parent company of Nine Inch Nails record label Interscope Records) for pricing and distribution plans for Zero Year. He tagged the company's retail price of Year Zero in Australia as "ABSURD", concluding that "as a reward for being a 'true fan' you will be cheated." Reznor goes on to say that he hates Interscope, and in the coming years the "climate" of record labels may have an increasingly ambivalent impact on consumers who buy music. Reznor's post, in particular his criticism of the recording industry in general, attracted considerable media attention. In September 2007, Reznor resumed his attack on UMG at a concert in Australia, urging fans there to "steal" his music online rather than buy legally. Reznor went on to encourage the crowd to "steal and steal and steal again and give it to all your friends and continue stealing".
Reznor announced on October 8, 2007 that Nine Inch Nails has fulfilled its contractual commitment to Interscope Records and is now free to continue as a "total free agent, free from any record deal with any label." Reznor also speculates that he will be releasing his next Nine Inch Nails album online in the same way as The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! , which he generated. Reznor then released the first nine songs Ghost I-IV and the whole The Slip in 2008 for free download.
In another post on his website, Reznor again publicly criticized Universal Music Group to prevent it from launching official official remix fan websites. Universal refused to host the site just days before its scheduled launch, citing potential "allegations," in Reznor's words, "that they sponsor the same copyright technical infringement they demand [other media companies] to". Reznor wrote in response that he was "challenged at the last second to find a way to bring this idea to life without getting urinated because these media companies urinate all over their feet." Apart from these obstacles, the remix website was launched in November 2007.
Other companies
Nine Inch Nails was scheduled to perform at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, but withdrew from the show due to disagreement with the unstoppable network of George W. Bush's image as the background of the band's "The Hand That" Feed. "Soon after, Reznor wrote on his official website: "Apparently, our president's image is as pertinent to MTV as I am." MTV replied that it respected Reznor's view but was "uncomfortable" with the performance "built around partisan political statements." Performances by Foo Fighters replaced the Nine time slot Inch Nails on the show During the Lights in the Sky tour of 2008, several performances of "The Hand That Feeds" had Bush's image on the video screen behind the band.At the few shows ahead of the election, Bush's face was slowly changed as long as the song became John McCain's face.
In 2006, after being alerted by a fan website, Reznor pulled out a stop and quit on Fox News Channel for using three songs from The Fragile in the air without permission. The songs "La Mer", "The Great Below", and "The Mark Has Been Made" appeared on the episode of War Stories with Oliver North detailing the battle of Iwo Jima. A posting appeared on the Reznor blog, which read: "Thanks for the Fox head-up news.Cess and stop have been issued.FUCK Fox Fucking News."
As part of an alternate reality game accompanied by the release of Zero Year, three songs from the album were deliberately "leaked" before their official release at a number of Nine Inch Nails concerts on a USB flash drive. High quality audio files quickly circulate on the internet, and website owners who host files immediately receive a stop and request orders from the Recording Industry Association of America, despite the fact that viral campaigns, and the use of USB drives, are approved by Nine Inch Nails Label recordings. The source who broke the story was quoted as saying, "These idiots are pursuing the campaign the label signed."
Nine Inch Nails music is reported to have been used by the US military as a music torture to destroy the prisoners' detention. Reznor objected to the use of his music in this way with the following message on the front page of the Nine Inch Nails website: "It's hard for me to imagine anything more offensive, degrading, and angry than finding the music you put in your heart, and the soul in creation has been used for torture purposes, if there is a legal option that can be taken realistically, they will be aggressively pursued, with the potential monetary gains donated to human rights charities, thank God this country has emerged sideways with reason and we can place the Bush administration's government in power, greed, lawlessness and madness behind us. "
In addition to the disagreement on the use of Nine Inch Nails materials, some companies have rejected content due to perceived obscenity. In 2009, Apple rejected an update for the iPhone Nine Inch Nails app, NIN: Access , because it found The Downward Spiral to contain "offensive or obscene content", referring to lyrical content. Reznor criticized their decision, citing audio is also available through the iTunes app.
A similar incident involving the distribution of digital content occurred in 2013 when Nine Inch Nails re-released the original 1993 movie Broken in Vimeo. Within hours of launching, the video was removed for violation of terms of service on material that "harasses, incites hatred, or portrays excessive violence".
