History

In 1929, the American Radiator Company (founded in 1892) joined the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company (established in 1875) to form the American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corporation. The plumbing division, Standard Sanitary, will continue to sell their products under the "Standard" label until 1967, when the company was renamed the American Standard Corporation. The American Standard label is used for both divisions of that year.

In 1929, the American Standard bought the Kewanee Boiler Company which it kept until the early 1970s.

In 1984, the group acquired HVAC company Trane. In 1999, American Standard bought control of Armitage Shanks and Ceramica Dolomite from Italy from Blue Circle Industries for $ 430 million.

On February 1, 2007, the company announced it would divide the three divisions. The plan includes the sale of kitchen and bathroom divisions; and spin off from its vehicle control business system; the rest of the company, especially its AC business should be retained, and renamed "Trane":

  • The vehicle control division is separated, forming the WABCO Vehicle Control System.
  • Distribution of kitchens and showers for sale: Bain Capital Partners acquired the division with $ 1,745 billion. Bain Capital sells North America and Asia operations to Sun Capital and Lixil Group while maintaining European and Latin American operations as Ideal Standards. North American operations become American American Standards, while global business becomes Ideal Standard.
  • The rest of the company is renamed, taking its name from its heated and air-cooled subsidiary, Trane. Ingersoll Rand made an offer to acquire the company on December 17, 2007, and the sale was completed on June 5, 2008.
