Xmarks , formerly Foxmarks , is a bookmark sync plugin for web browsers. This add-on was developed by a San Francisco-based company, Foxmarks (later renamed Xmarks), founded in 2006 by Mitch Kapor and acquired by LastPass in December 2010.

LastPass announced on March 30, 2018 that the Xmarks service will be disabled on May 1, 2018. At 11:59 UTC on May 1, 2018, the DNS entry for the xmarks.com domain is deleted and the server is turned off so that the IP query from the web browser has not received the entry An updated DNS will be enough time. Company history

In March 2009, Foxmarks was relaunched with a new name and service called Xmarks. Xmarks includes many new features like the suggested tagging marker.

On September 27, 2010 it was announced that due to the company's current financial projections resulting from the voluntary donation funding base, in January 2011, Xmarks will completely discontinue its services. On September 30, Xmarks CEO James Joaquin noted that he was "very surprised by the volume of interest" that has been revealed since the initial "cover announcement". This interest has been demonstrated by both potential buyers of the company, and by those who have so far promised to subscribe to the service on the site's "promise page". On their donation page, Xmarks strives to get an appointment of 100,000 of their users to pay $ 10-20 per year for the proposed Xmarks premium "service" launched on December 9, 2010. As of October 7, 2010, Xmarks investors have invested $ 9 million into the Xmarks project, but with the return on investment not yet clearly visible, unless enough promise is received on October 15, 2010, this initial investment fund seems to have reached its ending point.

On December 2, 2010, LastPass password management service acquired Xmarks. Since this acquisition, the program has been updated minimally, especially fixing bugs, and not yet having one new feature added. On October 9, 2015, LastPass was acquired by LogMeIn, Inc. for $ 125 million. After the acquisition, LastPass stated that they plan to continue to support Xmarks.

On March 30, 2018, in an email to the LastPass user announces that the Xmarks service will be discontinued on May 1, 2018.

Privacy

Xmarks provides the option to encrypt bookmarks while transiting between browsers and Xmarks servers. Individual user bookmarks are kept private from other users. However, there is clearly a privacy issue and confidence in sending bookmarks to third parties. Xmarks does provide an option for users to avoid Xmarks servers, using their own WebDAV or FTP server to store their bookmarks, but this option is only available with Firefox.

Bookmarks are analyzed to provide public services such as "Suggested Tags" and "Smart Search" (Xmarks enhancements to Google web search). The privacy policy states that the results of this analysis are published without providing any information about each user.
